Refinishing TC Air Filter Housing

As my son and I continue on in "restoring" our TC's Engine compartment to 'As Delivered " condition we are now preparing to refinish the TC Air Filter housing and mounting brackets.

Upon Inspection the Bracket that Mounts the Filter housing to the Air flow sensor is steel.

No issues there

The housing appears to be Galvanized Steel and as I remember that requires a Special Refinishing Preparation process be used on galvanized surfaces prior to painting with any type of commercial finish.

Obviously looking for anyone who can tell me what needs to be done ( chem prep solution etc. ?) to the galvanized housing such that it can be properly refinished to "As delivered" condition ????

I recently researched painting galvanized steel in order to paint my five year old outside hot water tank enclosure. What I found was that galvanized surfaces over about two years old didn't need any special treatment and that it was only newer surfaces that needed special preparation.

Thanks very much for your input. I had heard that was the case on some galvanized metal applications but your comments have reinforced my supposition.

In the 1960's Ford used Galvanized Steel on the rocker panels of it's Mustangs which I discovered when I was restoring my 1967 GT 350 some 35 years ago.

At that time ( car was just 10 years old ) we had to "chemically wash" the galvanized steel rockers with a "metal etching solution". That was After we stripped the factory Ford paint from them and prior to laying on Primer coat. It worked very well -


Following your information I am going to try a good media-blast on the Air Cleaner Box and then a light mineral spirits wash prior to painting-

The "Belt and Suspenders" approach - such as it is !
