This recaptcha issue is driving me nuts.  Started having the problem with an error whenever I tried to view contact info. on Craig's using Chrome.  If I used Firefox didn't have it.  I've uninstalled and installed Chrome (Win 10) but no luck.  Today couldn't login here because of reCaptcha on here using Chrome(1st time).  If I use Firefox on Craig's no problem getting contact info. so I used FF to login in here.  Guess what recaptcha error said it needed corrected to login.  Tried several times and finally let me login in.

Does NATO choose to use recaptcha or is it determined by my browser choice (guessing the browser)?

Anyhow, is anybody else having this issue with the POS recaptcha?

Thanx,  Fred

google has a few different recaptchas available. the one we currently use on this site is called recaptcha invisible. I've found that it is very buggy. I just switched it to a different one offered by google. let me know if it continues being an issue for you.

Andrew,

Thank you for the response.  I first had an issue on Craig's when I clicked on the contact information to get a their phone number and all it would state is "An error occurred".  Then it happened here when I tried to login and it returned a reCaptcha error with no solution.  I had removed Chrome and reinstalled but that didn't fix it.  So I finally did the painful thing and removed Chrome and all my cookies.  Reinstalled and now things are fine here and on Craig's.  So I'm thinking it was something that was cached by Chrome.  Just annoying having to type in the URLs the first time now but not so bad.

Thanks again,

Fred

That's exactly what it is. And it doesn't help that so many websites use it because it's so easy to implement despite it isn't so nice to the legitimate users.

On site of mine that was receiving dozens of registrations per day, I simply did a question and answer challenge that was relevant to the site. I created a few different questions and answers so that it would rotate on each inquiry. So for a site like this, one could simply pose questions like:

What year was the first T-Bird Turbo Coupe?

What year was the last T-Bird Turbo Coupe?

Was the 2.3L Turbo a 4cyl or 6cyl engine?

List one year when the T-Bird Turbo Coupe was in production.

Although spammers are smart, as they can even get around recaptcha when some normal people can't (!), when you provide site-specific question and answer as a challenge it's much easier to the user while still keeping out some of the spammers that won't know the answer to the above questions without doing research. I found they didn't do that research and went to the next site.
