Hey all... it's been awhile since I've had any real TC problems (imagine that!! but things have been good) but it's finally caught up to me. Awhile back after new control arm bushing, end links and tie rods, my TC developed a noise like groaning or excessive road noise. The symptoms were whenever you steer to the left or changing lanes or cornering left, the noise was evident (not loud, just enough to notice) and it wasn't a grinding or squealing noise either). Going to the right, straight or under braking the noise really wasn't their, slightly but probably not noticeable by anyone else. At first I attributed it to the new bushings/parts just being stiff. Well a month or so later it was getting more pronounced so I had my mechanic take a look at it yesterday because I thought it was a wheel bearing going bad. Well I was part right... it's was a wheel bearing, not the front though as I had thought. Nope it was the back. I said to him... thought so, he said well that's not all, I'm like oh shit hear it comes..... the bad bearing on the left rear cut a groove in the axle and he recommends replacing it. I said how much, he said I'll check and call you back. I asked if he still had it apart that I could stop by and see, he said nope it's back together because they would have to order the parts. I said good, I'll pick it up tonight and you can call me with the figures tomorrow, so I picked it up last night.
Ok this am, phone rings... he says you ready, I say NOPE! Bearings are $26 each and the left axle is $271 ea. I said DAMN! he said and that's for an 8.8 rear, if it's a 7.5 then it's $377 ea. I'm like no way in hell am I doing that right now. I said I'll put in the offset bearings, ride it and see how they do for awhile. I'm the type if I'm replacing the left side, the right side is getting replaced too. That would be like replacing brake pads on the left front and not the right.
So, lesson learned here, whenever you first hear a strange noise, FIND OUT WHAT IT IS ASAP! and I didn't even let this go on for long, maybe a month, but then again this is not a daily driver so the TC may see 100 miles a week, maybe, unless it's a road trip. Dan/Sam... I'm kinda glad I didn't make VMP the other week, I really would be looking at a new axle, if I'm not already.
As it stands, I'm going to be putting in the offset bearings when I get a chance and see how they do. I need to look into aftermarket axles, so if anyone has info/sites please let me know here on the board or email me directly at [email protected] I'm aware of the Mustangs catalogs like Holcomb Motorsports, Brothers Performance, Summit Racing, and a few others, but please send all help info you know of. Anyone whose experienced this problem, please post and email with any advice or help.
I also thought about buying a complete used rearend but that would be more trouble than its worth right now. I know the rest of my rearend is fine (especially the brakes) so I'd rather not open that can of worms just yet. (Dan... refrain from any comments on the rearend line! LOL)
Later all, it probably will be a few weeks before I get around to doing the bearings so I'll update with a new post later on.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
