What would be a good match for the raven color used on the plastic trim pieces?  Unable to find anything that is called Raven, however some reference to satin black however the raven isn't really black.. more of a blue black or gray black???

Most paint stores these days can scan an item and generate a paint code. All you need is something to scan!

Most automotive paint stores, at least around here, can put custom mixed paint in spray cans for you, but it isnt cheap. Probably 20 years ago I did this and I seem to remember it was about $20 a can, which translates into probably $30 a can these days.

Thanks, I'll check around.  I remember having paint put in an aerosol can before quite some time ago but when I last checked, it seemed they weren't doing that any longer.  I'll see what I can find in town.

Should there be additives added for plastic?  Was hoping to find something in the SEM paint line as that seems to get very good reviews.

Flex additive is probably a good idea.

Thanks... Never heard of LMR but when looking at their site, they may have something close (87-87 Mustang Charcoal Black and 79-93 Mustang Black)... I'll give them a call after the holiday weekend and see what they think is close for the raven color.

I'll check around some auto paint shops too...

Well, you shouldn’t do this, because first off interior paint is going to formulated differently than exterior paint—I would think because it must be low odor and for breathable plastics and vinyl—so it’s going to have to be a very specialized paint store.

And, the paint has changed over the past 30+ years, possibly due to aging and fading. You might end up with the wrong paint.

A couple of years ago I was at a paint store that has served me well over the past 25+ years, Space Age Paint in Mesa, AZ. I had just completed the modification on the center console that was part of the BossAudio double-DIN installation, and that plastic piece needed to be repainted.

I had my paint codes from the door pillar. BUT, as it turned out, they were a little—shall we say—incorrect. My interior code was listed as BH. The chart below is from TurboFord.org, found after some searching:

As you can see, there is no BH code listed. I asked if they had any reference material there, as they are a paint shop. After some digging around they found some old Ford sheets from 1987-88 that had paint chips on them. I settled on the Midnight Blue because I thought it looked close, and had the store mix some up as touch-up and also put some in a spray can. The total cost for all this was about $50, and of course mixed paint cannot be returned to refunded.

When I got home it was immediately obvious that this was the wrong shade. I had made some photographs of the paint chip pages, but the lighting was poor, so they were practically useless. So I went back there and brought a piece of the old console with me, which probably would have been a good idea in the first place. It turned out the ACTUAL shade was Shadow Blue (shown as BL not BH), which was much closer. So that’s what I ended up with.

I had purchased some spray Interior touch-up paint from a Ford Parts Department more than 20 years ago, and I used that to repaint the glove compartment latch (I got it NOS and it wasn’t painted), as well as the manual transmission console panel (the circular part around the gearshift). In bright sunlight it’s clear that’s not the correct shade, it’s much lighter.

So the question is: if Ford sold me the correct shade of touch-up paint based on my interior paint code, is that paint code wrong...or has the paint discolored that badly? The argument against the latter is that all the rest of the interior matches. And, when I redid the headlining in April there were no obvious differences between exposed and hidden sections.

And—while I’ve always believed I have a Raven interior (because I have not seen a darker one in pictures than mine), clearly the paint code for Raven is different than Shadow Blue. And yes, it is a darker blue not grey or charcoal or black.

It’s notable that according to the reference Space Age Paint has, my exterior finish is Dark Smoke Metallic. This is also not found in the list above, or anywhere else I have found online. But, it was listed on the paint chip pages I saw at the store. My exterior paint code is actually listed as 18, which is Medium Gray.

I started my previous past yesterday and did not complete it until a little while ago, so I didn’t see the recent responses.

I used SEM flexible bumper paint for repainting my front bumper cover last fall. I can testify to its quality—I was impressed by its application and how well it has held up since then (as far as stone chips, etc.). BUT I must warn you—be wary of the selections. I needed a Metallic finish, and instead got one that was not by accident, because I did not know there was one available (it was in the wrong spot). I ended up spraying over that incorrect paint with the Metallic one, which actually worked out well because I was able to use less of it, as I already had the same non-metallic shade as coverage.

It’s also for vinyl and plastic in general, so it would be a good choice. As Jeff says, flexibility couldn’t hurt and would probably be a good idea.

Another word of caution: It cost me almost $18 A CAN at Space Age Paint. I looked online and found the same prices everywhere else, and I would have had to pay Shipping as well. Of course, this is flexible bumper paint, so it is more of a specialty product.
