This is now my second turbocoupe. A little history: I got this car off ebay for 1300 with 120,000 miles. It said it needed an exhaust gasket. I won the car and when I got there whew was the exhaust leak loud. I figured the E6 had warped somehow and I could feel the exhaust hitting my hand under the # 2 runner. I got it home and bought a T3 and new E6 for the car along with some other goodies like the braided oil return line and a 3 inch downpipe. Well I got it all on last week and went to start it..... pffft pffft... It was still makin the noise!!! WTFFFF! It was the head gasket! Blown right out the side. Hmmm what could make it blow there and not to a coolant port or between cylinders? really weird. Well I just took it apart today and while taking it apart I noticed that a head bolt seemed looser than it should be (right near where the head gasket had blown) Well It was snapped and the one next to it snapped also while loosening the head bolts. Awww man what now?? Well we used vise grips to get the one out but the other would not budge! Off to napa to get some drill bits and an easy out. well we drilled using some smaller sizes first then the final size was 19/64 and put the easy out in there. I was putting force on the easy out to loosen the bolt while I had a friend tapping downward on the easy out to vibrate the bolt loose. It worked!!! Now the head is at the machine shop getting all squared up and the block was checked by myself with a straight edge and feeler gauges and its good. What in gods name makes a head bolt snap out of nowhere? I mean the motor was never apart but thats what happened and caused the blown head gasket so what gives? anyone ever heard of this happening? Also I bought one of those Ebay super 60 turbos and rebuilt the insides before I even put it on with a 360 thrust bearing and gapless oil seal. I took alot of pictures of all the things I had to do to make this turbo work and be reliable. I will post a full writeup with pics when Im done putting humpty dumpty back together again. wish me luck.

Sounds like quite the chore you've gotten yourself into! At least its worth it...

Depending on which headbolts snapped, maybe rust from a coolant leak due to bad HG? My bolts were quite rusted because of coolant leaking from its jacket into the bolt area. ???

Hot gases escaping annealed the bolt??

I would suspect the bolts were overtorqued, thus lost their clamping ability allowing leak to begin.

Congratulations on getting the old bolt out with drills and an easy out. The story usually goes that the easy out got broken too. I've had a head bolt break taking it out. I think someone either over torqued it or it was a defective bolt.

Its pretty much a miracle that it came out. When I heard the creak I thought for sure the easy out snapped but it was the bolt that finally gave up the ghost and came out of there. Im still a little frustrated that the guy who sold me the car probably knew exactly what was wrong with it and dumped it on me claiming a "warped exhaust manifold or something". It will definately be worth it when its all back together!
