Question on the gas tank

Ok so the tank is out for the 5th time I think. Looks like the gasget for the hanger was leaking, but I am not 100% sure.

The tank was leaking a bit and just kept getting worse. It was at the point where gas was just "peeing" off of the tank. I thought it was a line or something but none were leaking.

I assulted the top of the pump hanger with the sand blaster to clean it up. I have the first coat or POR15 on it.

Time for the tank. I was cleaning rocks out of the ring in the tank that the pump goes in and the thing moved! I think maby that part that isin the tank could be leaking ? Not sure what is up with it or what can be done. If I am lucky the POR15 in the crack between that ring and the actual tank will seal ?

Any suggestions or advice ?

Thanks

John, you need to know what is leaking and fix it properly. Counting on paint to stop a leak is not a proper fix.

That was kinda sarcastic. The square O-ring was not on the top of the tank properly, that is what looked to be leaking. However the round hole in the tank could have been leaking too.
Is there another seal in the tank for the round hole that the pump assembly goes in ? It did spin a bit when removing small rocks from it.

Is that an indicator that the tank is bad ? Is there another seal inside the tank ? I am not willing to cut my tank open to see whats inside.

The pump flange should not turn. It is held in place by a metal locking ring that tends to corrode down to almost nothing in the great white north with salted roads. Is the locking ring even there? Is it badly corroded? Possible all you neew is a new square O ring and new locking ring, both still available from Ford, AFAIK.

The only seal aroud the pump hole is the square thin O ring seal that goes under the pump holder that is held in by the lock ring

I must not be describing this properly. Probably the gas fumes getting to me lol.

The lock ring was in place, was actualy replaced when the walboro pump went in. The gasget appears to be the reason gas was leaking, when I pulled the assembly out of the tank, it was not in the proper place. It seemed a bit big and did not sit in the dip properly. I decided to paint the tank and pump hanger because they are real rusty and hope to not have the tank out AGAIN!

The problem or question I have is on piece in the tank, the piece the lock ring actualy locks into. There is a slight gap between that ring inside the tank and the acutal sheet metal of the tank. I wanted to get the inside that little space good and clean so I could get the paint inside of it to prevent rust in that spot. I was working on getting the little pebbles that were stuck there, out. I used a bit of force to remove on that was stubborn, and the round piece that the lock ring goes in turned.

That is why I question if it could leak gas or pose any other problems. Does it screw in/out, have a seal. Is it welded in place ? I am just looking to cover all of the bases here, I have had the tank out so many times and I am really sick of it.

O and BTW, ford wanted $346+ uncle sam for the pump assy.

I can tell you that the piece the lock ring attaches to never moved on the 3 tanks I have participated in replacing pumps in.

i know what you are saying grey88. I recently replaced the tank on my 86 and i noticed that the part you are talking about moved on the hole for the pump. The hole for the sending unit completly rotted off and came out while still locked to it.. These parts are not supposed to move. They look to be crimped or "stamped" in when the tank is made. maybe yours has rusted from the inside letting this part loosen up and spin. Id put it all together and put some silicon on it. Other choice is get a new tank but if it is otherwise in good condition just seal it up with the silicon

BTW i got a tank off ebay from a "gas tank seller" for 79.95. and it seems to be a nice part.

um i think fuel will eat silicone after a period of time. if i was going to use anything to seal it u i would use some JB weld on there, or a gas tank repair puddy.

FYI i replaced the stock pump with a walbro 255 i cleaned the pump hanger with a wire wheel and painted it with a good rust inhibiting paint well not two days goes by and i have a bad tank leak. i drop the tank and i put a pin hole in one of the steel lines going to the motor. i had to remove it and find another one. Ford does not offer the hanger by itself it comes with the pump and i think i was quoted in the area of 400 bucks. thank god my 86 parts car had a hole in the trunk when someone replaced the pump and was able to easily remove the entire assembly. napa sells it the same with pump and hanger and so does autozone. all very expensive.
