well, i finally got around to pulling codes

18-no tach input, spout grounded
38-??
31-??
14-PIP failure
63-TP sensor reading low
72-power interrupt

now for the questions...spout grounded, does that just mean its disconnected?

TP sensor, im assuming throttle posision sensor

power interrupt? whats that mean?

also, i did the KOER test, idle went high, dropped, high, then the engine died, is that proper?

Code 31 egr valve is not in its normal closed position. Code 48 shows this is a 3.8 liter indicates that the system does not have proper side to side fuel control.

24: ACT out of range. Is the sensor temp under 50 deg F? If so, ignore the code.

28: VAT out of range. Is the sensor temp under 50 deg F? If so, ignore the code.
VAT = Vane Air Temperature sensor. It's located inside the Vane Air Meter (VAM)

If this is a V6 issue it belongs in the Off Topics Forum

its a TC issue, i just signed up a few years ago, before i got the TC, and had my 3.8

the tests i ran were at probably 40 degree's, so i can ignore those codes, thanks Pete

also, since ive ran the codes, no other codes have popped up other than 24 and 28, because its been cold

What kind of issues are you having?

What is the ignition timing set at? Does it changes when you pull the SPOUT jumper?

Is the tach working?

You need to run codes when the engine is at operating temp...that's why you're getting the "out of range" codes.

It is not normal for the engine to die during the test. You might want to check your base idle setting and readjust the TPS. That is probably what is causing the TP code and allowing it to die.

ill have the car running for say 20 minuets, then for about 5 minutes, it just starts bucking and acting up, trying to die, and then itll just clear up

i havnt checked the timing or even really messed with anything, seeing as i get off as its getting dark, and its been cold lately

also...i dont even know where the hell the spout jumper is, i havnt had much chance to hunt for it, but the tach does work

Codes 31 and 38 don't apply to the TC.

Code 72 can be caused by electrical interference to the EEC, a possible circuit issue between the Integrated Relay Controller and the EEC, a failing EEC relay inside the Integrated Relay Controller, or a circuit issue to the Integrated Relay Controller.

The SPOUT is located near the distributor base. It will be a short black plug that is connected to a wire harness. The plug is simply shorting the two terminals in that harness connector. With the SPOUT circuit closed (SPOUT plugged in) the EEC has control over the ignition timing. You want that plug there for normal operation. You only remove the SPOUT plug when you check and adjust the base timing.

As Pete said, codes 24 and 28 will set if the temperature is not atleast 50F.

As Chuck said, the fact that your engine stalls during the EEC tests at the spot you described is likely because your base idle is too low. You will need to check and adjust the base idle as well as reset the TPS. That is covered in this site's technical article section:
<a href="http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/idletpsadjustment.html">Base Idle and TPS Adjustment</a>

The running issues sounds like it could be an ignition issue, or it could be because of that Code 72. If the EEC really is briefly losing power (that is what that code can mean), it will create issues like that.

"Code 72 or 78 indicates that while key power was present, VPWR had an interrupt, or interference from electrical noises caused the processor to reset, resulting in possible stalls, high idle rpm, lack of power on acceleration or other drive symptoms."

i would probably take care of your ignition issues, first.

The 14 and the 18 codes would also steer me in the direction of the TFI, the TFI connector or the hall effect sender in the dist as well.

i have a spare distributor i plan on putting the PIP and TFI in, damn things are expensive, but if they last another 17 years, itll be money well spent

i may mess around with it some more today, and pull out the meter and see where the TPS is, the car idles around 1000-1100, so i figured it was fine, but no telling what the TPS reads, i may also pull out the timing light, and see where thats at
