All VIN #s start with 1. So 87 TBird #1 is actually VIN #100001, so your car is about in the middle. The ~125K is total TBird production, with TC's included. All were built on the same production line.

Only the last 6 numbers of a VIN # relate to the production sequence for that model year.
And the 1st digit of those last 6 stands for the Car division. ie 100,001 through 600,000 = Ford Division vehicles. 600,001 through 999,999 are Lincoln/Mercury, Merkur Division Vehicles

Your car was # 52,061 out of 128,123 Tbirds built in 87.

Production Figures:

1983: 12,566 of 121,999 Total Thunderbird production
1984: 14,744 of 170,551 Total Thunderbird production
1985: 20,804 of 151,852 Total Thunderbird production
1986: 21,315 of 163,965 Total Thunderbird production
1987: 23,833 of 128,123 Total Thunderbird production
1988: 35,271 of 139,411 Total Thunderbird production
TOTAL TC's: 128,533

Your car was the 52,061 Thunderbird assigned a vin number, it could be built a week or two ahead or behind 52,062. Case in point, my white TC is 228955 with a build date of 0606(June 06) on the buck tag. My red one is 228,385 but is dated 0621. So it was seralized 570 ahead of my white one, but built 15 days later. Usually there is not that great of difference, but I suspect they waited to do batches of the bright red ones as it was special paint.

Production numbers are assigned and records kept of the SVT vehicles. My Lightning is #249 of 5276 built in '93.
