Problem with my TC

Hi guys,

New to the boards. I am having a problem with my 1988 T-bird TC. I am getting alot of detonation while accelerating and a another load noise, which sounds like it coming from the passenger side of the car. It sounds like a rattling noise like something is loose only when I hit about 2500rpms. This is what I have done to the car so far. I had an overheating problem and replaced the ECT and the fan relays. Also, I flushed the coolant. The rattle noise actually sounds like its coming from around the dashboard area on passenger side. Could this possibly be a wastegate or accuator problem? Any help would be appreciated. The detonation occurs in all gears if this helps any.

Thanks in advance.

Some of the things that can cause detonation are:
incorrect cam or ignition timing
overheating
lean A/F ratio (lack of fuel)
clogged converter (generally accompanies lack of power, reduced boost levels.
too high a boost level for the given turbo
wrong octane fuel.bad fuel
excess oil in the CC, A/F mixture

If it's happening under light throttle it could be an EGR problem.

I doubt if the rattling is a WG or WGA problem. You might want to check for exhaust manifold leat at the head, cracked runners in th emanifold or leaking between the exh manifold and the turbo (gasket burned out)

Hey Pete,

I have checked the timing its at 10 degrees. I never did check to see if I have an exhaust leak at the turbo flange or the header. I will check that next. Exhaust does seem louder than usual. But would that cause detonation? Could I have a blown head gasket and not know it? This is my first time owning a Turbo car so I am an illiterate with these cars. Is there anything under the dash that could be making the noise? It sounds like something trying to open and close like a when going from heater to a/c but louder.

Check timing and fuel pressure. Also change the fuel filter and possibly the injector screens are clogged.I had the same problem and it was clogged injector screens.I cleaned them and installed a new fuel filter.Stay away from the junk fram filters as they let big particles by.I am running 16 psi boost no innercooler yet and no detonation.Just got to get the right setup.Welcome to the world of the 2.3L turbo.

Deathsythe, I know you said you get detonation in all gears, but is it just under heavy throttle and boost or do you get it under light throttle?

It starts detonating after it gets to operating temperature. Then after awhile in stop and go traffic it start detonating even with light throttle, I have to kinda feather the gas when I start out and happens in all gears. The other noise happens when I start getting boost.

Have you chaecked the coolant level lately?
Do you cooling fans work? What is the temperature gauge doing? This sounds like its either an over heating problem or an EGR problem

It is not coolant I just had it flushed and had 2 sensors replaced 2 weeks ago. The gauge never goes past half way, unless the IVR or whatever it is goes wacky. Then none of my gauges work right then. I was thinking maybe bad gas, but I still notice some spark knock only when hard accelerating now. I was running it a little hard tonight and it just doesn't seem right past 3500rpm, seems, to stumble around and loses boost. I can only feel it because the gauge vacuum line is broke for the turbo.

You said that you checked the timing, but there is something special about the timing on our cars. You have to check it with the spout out. If you check it with the spout left in, you should be getting around 30 degrees of timing instead of 10. Do you know about this???
