Power Tour 2006

I know it's early, but... any of you planning on going?

June 3 - 10th
Kissimmee, FL - Englishtown, NJ

I've been dying to go for 10 years now, since hearing about the first one in 95; it's on my lifetime to-do list. This one is somewhat close to home and I can't let the opportunity pass. My cousin and I were supposed to go 2 years ago in his 68 Camaro , but when it came time to go he didn't have the money (and I could afford both of us).

It'll be a 2500 mile round trip for me (Sumter to Kissimmee, Kissimmee to Englishtown, and Englishtown back to Sumter), but I'm in it for the long haul and already have my co-pilot agreed upon.

That gives me roughly 8 months to get the Turd Bird in good enough running order to make the long haul. I'll have to put the body and interior work aside for now (except for the rear passenger quarter panel which is down to the metal now) and focus my efforts up front.

Here's what I'm planning to do between now and then:

Ranger roller cam
Gillis valve
Bob Log headers and a 3" downpipe
single 3" stainless exhaust
route a 28x40 stainless ic up front
Walbro 255

I amay also need new tires to make a 2500 mile trip. The current ones are fairly new but have been sitting for 2 years and are all cracked up (worried about rot). So if I do, I'll probably go ahead and opt for some lightweight 17" racing rims (matching stock tire height) to lower the rotational mass.

What do you guys think? Suggestions/opinions? Something I'm missing or overlooking that I should check before making this kind of journey?

Man, I'm not going to be able to sleep for the next 8 months...

Like you it's on my lifetime list. Those dates sound like they might conflict with Carlisle so it may not be in 2006 for me.

Yup, that dates always seem to conflict with Carlisle. In fact, PT 2005 had a layover about 10 miles from my house, but I was at Carlisle.

I did it in 2000. Detroit to LA. I did the return trip in 3 days. I left Friday evening and was back in time for work Monday.

You might want to do some internet surfing about the tour before you go. With GM being the main sponsor there have been rumours of it turning into the "Chevy Tour" ie parking GM stuff out front and leaving the Ford and Chrysler stuff in muddy fields.

I did one leg of the 1998 east coast tour. It was a good time and there was much to entertain you in the evening when you got to that days destination. I think I will do the leg from Columbia to Virginia.
