Power Door Locks. Need Some Help.

I am having a problem with my car, my doors will lock with the buttons but they dont unlock with the buttons. I have to pull the door handle or use the key to unlock the doors. The relays are beneath the passenger seat, right? I swapped them and it made no difference, when i press the lock or unlock button on either door i can hear the relays make a little noise. I think the relays and swithches are working good.

With only the passanger side door panel off, i had to strip a tiny bit of insulation off the wires from the power door lock actuator because i didn't see a plug going into it. Using a test light i checked these wires and here's what i found...

1. Press 'lock' button and one wire shows a signal and the doors 'lock'.

2. Press 'unlock' button and both wires show a signal and the door's DO NOT 'unlock'.

My friend that is helping me work on it says he thinks it could be a a bad ground or bad actuators.

Anyone have any idea what it wrong with my power door locks?

Also what is this plug for? You can see it in the first picture in the top right corner.

The connector for the lock motor is located at the bottom of the motor. The other connector may be for an anti-theft system.

When you press lock you should have +12v on the PK/BK wire and ground on the PK/O wire. Unlock is is +12v on the PK/O and ground on PK/BK. When not touching the switch both wires should be grounded Ground in both cases is through the relays, lock ground through the unlock relay, unlock through the lock relay. The black wires from the switches and the relays are spliced together under the carpet on the right side floor pan. Ground for the whole system is located on the right floor pan under the carpet near the relays.

The switches work by grounding the coil of the lock or unlock relays. At the switches the BK wire should be grounded, PK/Y goes to the lock relay coil and PK/LG to the unlock relay coil. Both pink wires at the switch should show +12v coming through the relay coils.

Power for the relay coils is from fuse 8 through a LG/Y wire. Power for the locks is from fuse 12, BK/W wire.

If the wires from the relays to the lock motors is OK unplug the relays and momentarily apply +12v to the PK/BK wire and ground to the PK/O, locks should lock. Reverse the connections locks should unlock. If this works the problem is in the relays or switches or the wiring between them.

You really need a meter to check the voltages and grounds as the results from using a test light can be confusing.

I hope this will help you solve the problem.

My door power door locks are working agian. After taking out the passanger seat, and the door panels and messing around for hours, they just started working again. I didn't change anything so i don't know what or where the problem was, but they are working again so i'm happy. P.S i lubed up the actuators, but after they started to work again and i think that help some.

I am still having a minor problem though. The passanger side switch works good, the buttons instantly lock/unlock the doors. The driver side switch also locks instantly. Only on the driver side switch there is some delay when i press 'unlock'. It takes a second before i hear the relay and the doors actually unlock. I think that the switch may need cleaning. What do you guys think?

I am a bit scared if i try to open the switch that there are going to be some small springs and ????? come flying out, and i'll never get it back together. Does anyone have pictures of a switch opened up? Is this even something to worry about? What should i do?

P.S. Thanks DonH, that help me to better understand what was going on. Pete i got you email. Thanks Smile

Hey guys,

I just want to clarify what I will need to get my power door locks up and running. I have the actuators in the doors and the lock/unlock buttons in the armrests. All I need now is the two relays to make it all work right? Its for a 1983/1984 TC. Will 2 of these relays work?

Thanks,
