Piston Rods and crankshaft ?

I have been tearing down my old engine as I have been waiting for the Machine shop to finish my new(60,000 miles)"1987" engine and head.

What do I find in my 1985 172,000 mile engine, but numbers hand stamped on the rod caps and corresponding rods ? This wasnt done at the factory was it? I mean to say that Ford didnt stamp numbers on each rod and cap did they?

Also with 172,000 miles, would not there be a giant ridge at the top of the cylinders ?? Well, there was absolutely none to speak of, pistons flew out. and man were those rod bearings F*#$%# up !

I don't remember any "stamped" numbers on the rods. It isn't a factory thing. I'd say the engine has been apart before

It's not unusual for people to report hone marks in the cylinders on engines with well over 100K, So it's not a real surprise to hear you didn't have any ridges

Thanks Pete !

There were still hone marks in my cylinders too. I guess the previous owner had it apart, as I am finding alot of shoddy repairs and wire splicing throughout. Seems now I have alot more work than I had anticipated.

The rods I just took out of an engine were numbered also. I would imagine it was apart at some time. That block had to be bored out though. The crankshaft was standard size and in good condition.
