The pic that Matt S has doesn't have a 2nd...the pic in the catalog does...So it's not the same I don't think.

The one in the '88 TC catalog is missing a range, too.

So someone have a picture of what my shifter SHOULD look like? Is the catalog correct, D/2/1? That sounds like a C3 to me. Where's OD for 4?? There's a few conflicting descriptions here. Should it have OD/D/2/1, or D 3/2/1? or what?
My shifter looks just like the one in an 84 5.0 mustang I had....only I know that was a C4 (?).
But my TC doesn't have a C4, 98% sure of that.

As far as mine, I clealy feel 4 gears before the torque converter locks...

Hey, El-Nino, the 1st to 2nd blow up is what people tell me not to do: Don't put 'er in 1st and floor it into 2nd....thar she blows...! I can't do that anyway.
I forget who it was that told me that though. So I thought this was the solution to that problem, since the computer ALWAYS shifts from 1st to 2nd at 4k rpm; and I can't control it. I can choose from 2nd to D, and then to OD.
Not a big deal as I really don't want to pull a transmission I blew; but just curious if I have some oddball rarity or someone after the factory did it.
From my earlier post it has some more wear than it should for only 78k on the car, so I wonder if the original owner blew it up under warranty and that's what they gave him??? Rear end doesn't lock much any more, which sounds to me like lead-foot syndrome: someone wore out the clutches.
Anything else I could check to see? I did have a dealer run my numbers, and they don't have any record of doing any work to the car. Not even the EGR recall or the ignition switch recall.

And in retrospect, is this going to hurt me if I decide to show the car down the road??
Maybe I have some super cool rare feature only put on a few cars (yeah right, but I can dream).

I just checked a picture in the Hot Rod August 88 road test on the TC, and it shows a different shifter. The one shown has P/R/O/D/2/1 yours seems to be missing a gear.

Hey KMcGrathNJ: Where neutral in this scenario??

Neutral? Who needs neutral? j/k i left it out. I scanned the page for you but its a little blurry, if you count the gears though it is all I said plus Neutral.

Yeah, this is an A4LD shift pattern, from my '88 TC A4LD.

Anyone could argue that the one in the '88 TC catalog either had an Overdrive range (and a remote overdrive cancel button like some other Ford vehicles) or didn't have an overdrive gear at all. Generally overdrive is a circle around the letter D, but i think i can think of a few Fords that weren't like that.

But it's not uncommon to find a difference between what the catalog shows, and what is actually used in production.
