Here's a pic of the shifter on my car. You'll notice there's no 2. "1" is actually 2nd and 1st. It won't shift itself into 1st until speed gets around 10mph, and never shifts into 2nd after about 4000 rpm.
Anyone ever ran into a dealer changing this stuff before sale? The factory research paper does show an A4LD.

Matt, that sounds like AOD operation,do you have a 2.3? Sorry to sound stupid but AOD's won't bolt up to a 2.3.

Every once in a while somebody posts something that's really off the wall; I think we've only had one other post like this. Get under the car and check the tranny itself to find out what you've really got.

Check out the 1988 Tbird catalog. Inside the cover it has a TC with the same shifter in it.

Well, I'm pretty sure it's an A4LD. It does have 4 gears, the pan is stepped with the bottom step being a circle (if that makes sense) and I got Ford to do a research paper on it; the paper said it left the factory with an A4LD. Also I just did a filter and fluid job and the filter/gasket that I ordered for a 1988 TC matched exaclty what came off of it.
Thanks for the help. Does any old shifter fit on any old transmission? Maybe they put this in to limit the 1st to 2nd tranny blow up?
Where can I find a copy of the TC catalog?

I just checked a picture in the Hot Rod August 88 road test on the TC, and it shows a different shifter. The one shown has P/R/O/D/2/1 yours seems to be missing a gear.

Dial-up beware.
