PC1 ECU swap hiccup, need help

I am in the process of switching to brown tops and a PC1 in my 84 TC. From what I had read, the swap was supposed to be plug and play from my old E4 PCM to the PC1. The issue is that I see a few pins that do not match between the two, and I am reluctant to just plug the PC1 in and give it a try with fear of frying something. Also, I actually have two PC1s to use (their pinouts match perfectly).

E4 on top and PC1 on bottom:

Probably not helpful:

And for fun, my injector cleaning results from Cruzin Performance! Three of the four look like they really needed it.

Can't really help much, but I don't think you run the risk of messing anything up by trying it out. :dunno: If it were me, I'd just throw it in and see what happens.

Yup, turns out it's a direct swap. The '84 harness doesn't even use the bank of four pins on bottom, and the other missing two are AC cutoff and boost control. All of the important stuff matches up 1:1 and both seem to have extra/unused pins.

Plugged in the PC1 and she fired right up, went for a quick test drive and I think it idles, revs, and returns to idle after letting off the gas smoother. Could be placebo effect though. Better take it easy until I get the injectors in!

So you are still running the green tops for the moment? Definitely need to get those switched out before you get on it.

I find this abit funny...10 years ago I swapped the stock 86 turbo auto computer to a LA3...(the best 2.3T computer) I had to move a few wires.... but after that the car just started....I was shocked.

Well Im glad for you the switch worked...sweet.

Travis

P.S. those old EEC4 computers are damn tuff

Yeah, injectors are in the mail on the way back from being cleaned. Just took a short spin around the block with the green tops still in, afterwards the PC1 hadn't complained enough to store any codes but I cautiously avoided boost.

For more fun, here's a comparison of the old E4 computer vs. the newer one. It's clearly a major revision into the PC1, and I'm sure the LA3 is that much more. I may get to a LA3 some day (or Stinger PiMP..?), avoiding it for the time being since it'd take a bit of extra work to get it going in my 84.

Honestly - if you would be considering the Pimp in the future, I wouldn't even bother with an LA3 swap at any point. Consider that with the Pimp there are no pinout change requirements (AFAIK) so doing all that work on a swap that doesn't get you many gains (stock LA3) is, in my opinion, a waste of time and resources.

Oh for sure, it would be one or the other. And with the PC1 in that's really at about the bottom of my list of priorities.
