I bought Stingers exhaust, and bought a 3" cat, Dynomax ultraflow muffler, and 3" tailpipe kit from summit. Had a local shop install it and then off to the smog station.
Finally after a year and a half I Passed smog! before the nex exhaust:
IDLE HC: 229 MAX: 120
2500 HC: 70 MAX: 140
After:
IDLE HC: 4
2500 HC: 18

The CAT was bad, it was completely clogged when the oil seals blew.
The place that did my exhaust was Marco Mufflers in Orangevale, CA. Excellent job on it too, took them a bit to fit the over axle 3" but they did it and didn't charge extra.

So now I have a GT3071R, 3" full exhaust, Ported E6. Soon is an AFPR and Chucks motor mounts.

update to my contuning story of fixing up my 88.
Yesterday i installed chucks motor mounts. what a PITA. drivers side was the worse. i ended up cutting out the bracket around the motor mounts to get a socket in there. putting it back in was just as hard, theres no room to fit a socket around the forward bolt, i had to use an open end wrench and was only able to turn it 1/4 a turn at a time. theres just no room in there at all.

the passanger side was cake. and this time i went and bought a hex key bolt. no more fiddling with a wrench and 1/4" turns. a little bit of prying and it went right into place.

the car feels a lot better now, a little bit more vibration, but the mounts no longer bottom out. it helped that my a/c was removed for passenger side installation.

next up for chassis is probably CHE control arms.

The driver's side was a little harder when I did mine but I don't remember any real issues. Ratcheting box wrenches, got to love 'em.

still there. My previous EGR was bad so I replaced it with the one from my other car.
pete: a box wrench wouldn't fit around the bolt, it'd hit the side of the motor mount.

A little more update:
I was cruising when i decided it was time to try and give it some juice. around 4k rpms it stuttered and lost power. the A/F meter was going stoic instead of rich at WAT. i think that was the limit of my fuel pump. I gotta hook up a FP guage to find out. It sounded like it could be knocking but it wasn't loud. it was more like someone beating on drums then a rattling can.
so its either lack of fuel or the knock sensor pulling timing because of engine vibrations. funny thing is even after i shifted and brought it back down to 2k it still stuttered for a sec or two.

ive been considering building the same type of exhaust system you have on your car, hows the sound?is it a single out the rear?the smog shop told me that if the car was made with dual tail pipes its gotta have em on to pass smog,i live in a smog check 2 area where a loaded dyno test is required.would you please post the summit part#s that you used

converter: cto-6907
muffler: wlk-17229
the over axle pipes are the universal 3" tailpipe kit.
bought the downpipe and pipe from stinger. it was cut to allow for the cat.

you may want to find a different cat, someone recently posted here saying not to buy the catco cats. also i dont think the guy even checked the numbers on the cat, only to see if there was one. i'm not even sure if its a CA legal cat.
I had no problem with dual exhaust either, its a single drivers side.
The sound is great. it echoes a little bit in my driveway, but in the cabin its not so bad. it turned out a lot softer then I imagined actually.

the first times i brought the car in when it was failing, they did a dyno test. but when i did it this last time they didn't. ask them if they check older or turbo cars differently.

Also i didn't have a problem with the new turbo, AWIC, or gillis valve. i do believe i was able to get away with a lot.

update: I bought an autometer fuel pressure gauge. i'll find out my fuel problems with it. next to find a 3 guage pillar pod.
