Has anyone ever removed the rear package shelf to replace the cloth, or have any insight on what is involved?

I did mine 20 years ago. Remove HMSL (did 85 have the HMSL?) and rear seat bottom. this allows access to the bolts to remove the seat back (T45 or T50 if I remember right). There are a few plastic fasteners at the front of the package shelf to remove and the shelf slides out. No need to remove the sail panel trim.

I peeled off the rotted fabric and sanded down any rough spots. Went to local fabric store and got some automotive grade fabric that was a very close match to the original color. Cut it to size and cut openings for the speakers and HMSL (if applicable) using the original as a template. I used spray glue to attach the new fabric. Has held up very well over the last 20 years, but the car is garaged 99% of the time.

I'm guessing that HMSL is the 3rd brake light? I just missed that with my 85.5 built on march 10, 1985. I thought it was the only difference between mine and an 86, until I needed new motor mounts. 85.5's were different than 85's and 86's.

Yup, HMSL = high mount stop light. Sometimes known as CMSL = center mount stop light.
