Over boosted for the first time tonight

Just got back from playing with my new manual boost control valve ($15 ebay).
I have to say it felt good to finally be able to feel the turbo. Everything in my signature is new to me. I use to have a stock IHI automatic car before this one.

First pull with the screw 3/4 way out didn't change boost very much at all. I was topping out at 10lbs.

Second pull with screw all the way out, same result. Therefore, I stretched the spring to make it tighter.

Third pull: Go Baby Go! Boost gauge blew past the red mark on the stock gauge. Then BANG! I'm thinking, oh sh!t. I messed up this time. I let it coast and idle. Stopped at the store to check everything. I noticed antifreeze blew out of the radiator cap and got all over the header panel. She seems to be running good so I readjusted the valve.

Forth pull: The spring is still stretched too strong. Now I can't get it to drop below 15lbs.

Final pull: I drove it home without the valve and typed this up.

I guess I need bigger injectors huh ?

I'm not sure what kind of valve you got but on my old Gillis' I screw the valve in (less threads showing) to shorten the spring and increase the amount of boost created (and needed to open the valve to send boost signal to the WG

Manually stretching the spring doesn't seem right to me. Might consider replacing it and try a different adjusting technique.

Hope this helps

Running 15+psi out of a hybrid on 87 octane, advanced timing, and without an intercooler is flirting with disaster. You sailed right past the red on the stock gauge so you might have boosted close to 20psi.

I wouldnt suggest injectors just yet. First, get yourself an intercooler and a Wideband. Also, keep an eye on the coolant and oil. Sounds like you pooched a headgasket at best.

EDIT: Pete you are correct. Tightening the bolt makes more boost.I stretch the spring which made the same out come as screwing in the bolt. Either way I made too much. Sorry about misleading info above.

Original post:
LongbedGTs, I appreciate the knowledge. I'm not completely stupid (No Jokes Please Smile ). I've got 93 octane in it. However, I feel I went well past 20psi. It didn't creep up to the red line. It blasted past the red. I agree its flirting with disaster. I'll try not to let it happen again.

I just wanted to throw the experience on the board to give you all something to read. Plus, I need you all to help me take this to the next level. This is all pretty new to me.

One more thing. Its cutting out/loosing power at about 12psi. Maybe my gauge is incorrect or something.

Sorry bro, I wasnt trying to talk down to you. I was just going by whats listed in your sig.

The cutting out might be a lean condition. What do the plugs look like? Did it do this before or after the overboost?

Coolant blowing out the radiator cap sounds to me like you took out a HG for sure.
