It's only 0 when below ~32°F, and at that point it's still "thicker" (lower flow rate) than 30 is once it's warmed up. 0w30 didn't exist when these cars were built or they would have used it.

Getting new TC w 40K miles.  I have no idea about oil used in the car previously.  What oil would you recommend, natural or synthetic?  Weight? Any issues from changing from (presumably) natural to synthetic?

Thank you!

I first started using Mobil 1 10W-30, then switched for a while to Castro Syntec, then back again to Mobil 1. I run 5W-30 now, but again it’s pretty hot here and rarely gets below 30 degrees in the winter. Everything gets full synthetic—T5OD transmission, rear axle, power steering. I used SLICK 50 when PTFE was all the rage in the mid 90s, but don’t any more. Every couple of thousand miles I put SeaFoam in the gas tank, since it’s not being driven a lot right now (the transmission is making odd sounds, so it’s time for a look).

1987 Turbo Coupe w/T5OD, 8.8 axle, grey smoke; most options. Got it in 1991 with 41K miles: 3 turbos, 2 heater cores, 3 T5OD full rebuilds, 6 clutches, 1 head gasket, 2 Teves II ABS units, etc. later....
