My inspection of a K&N filter are the same things as the mobil 1 filter.

Napa filters are made by WIX, and are a good quality. Depending on what Im doing with the car I might use a cheapy filter. Usually after a HG change I run a fram and some basic oil. after about 500 miles I run either a motorcraft or napa filter, I dont notice a difference between the two. selecting an oil is always an arguement some people swear by synthetic some people hate it. You hear alot that synthetic doesnt make the gaskets swell as much causing more leaks in higher milage motors, I didnt see any difference when I ran it. I switch back to dyno oil b/c synthetic was a waste of money from my stand point. High milage motor, was using a bit of oil from blow by, and I was putting 3000 miles on it in 2 months.

My advise use what you always used in a oil, or trust in.

Napa has 3 different type of Oil filters. Basic, Silver & Gold series. I use the Gold one, which is their top of the line. I ususally cost me around 6-7 bucks, but you have to remember that the filter is supposed to capture as much dirt & contaminants and hold if from the engine. You can never skimp on a good oil filter.

FWIW, I noticed the Napa (gold) filters I used between 2 cars all have been able to be drained of old oil from the series of feed holes around the sides when changed, leaving me to believe the drainback valve has failed every time. I also happened to have an old Napa gold filter laying around that's at least a year old and it appeared to me that what Napa is selling now is not the same as a year ago; though the counter person has assured me it's still WIX. I've recently switched to purolator, mostly for convenience as the Napa is far away and closed on Sundays, and so far they are impossible to drain of old oil unless I get a screw-driver and poke the drainback flap while tipping upside down.

The purolator also is the only one that doesn't leak oil everywhere when unscrewed and are completely full of oil; the napa's dump oil all over the engine. This is a huge benefit on my Escort where the filter is located way up the firewall below the intake and is impossible to get out of the way of falling oil with my hand up there. The purolater, also, is the only filter that, when used, my valves in the Escort don't clack on startup; the mazda 1.8 HLA's are of notoriously poor oiling design and the subject of many TSB's and a recall. Even the Ford filter allows startup valve noise but not the purolator.

My $.02 YMMV
