odd clutch cylinder play

never replaced the clutch cylinder before.. it always was spot on thru 110K miles.

Yesterday i noticed i had to get the clutch down that last xtra inch to the floor to make a few shifts and by the time i made it to work and reversed into my spot, the clutch pedal would not come all the way back up leaving my gear in reverse and almost hitting a building. So i noticed on idle i can pump the clutch and it feels fairly decent but when revving the engine i feel i lose have the distance of the pedal and not enough to engage or disengage a gear. Very intermittent and confusing.. please help trouble shoot... hope its as simple as a new cylinder??

thanks,
Ron

Check the little clutch reservoir on the firewall. Is it low to empty? If so then you need to check the cylinders. The rod from the slave cyl to the clutch fork should move at least .54" when the pedal is pushed all the way down.

Hey Pete ..... ya its just under the mark so i added a drop but no change...no leaks either. I get that movement most the time but its been changing the last few rides to almost a pedal on the floor feel and then it slowly comes back to where i get a full pedal and normal movement. its really odd

so with a quick look i am assuming there is no vacuum connection to the hydraulics of the clutch master? This is a mechanical set-up?... been raining to much for me to get too into it right now

No vacuum...... It works just like a hydraulic brake system.

BE WARNED if you replace the clutch master cylinder. Nearly ALL the documentation you will likely read will tell you that it installs CLOCKWISE. Take it from me and my experience, this is NOT correct.

The newer Ford Supplement to the 1987-88 Shop Manual has the CORRECT method—it installs COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. Again, the standard Ford manual and my grey-jacketed Haynes 1983-88 Thunderbird one will tell you to install it the old way. I spent over an hour trying just that, convinced I wasn’t pushing hard enough.

Also, be certain that the eye of the master cylinder’s pushrod is in its proper place (near the clutch pedal boss) on the other side of the firewall before you begin the considerable effort of the actual install. I forgot to check this beforehand, and the eye wasn’t anywhere close and I had to RE-reinstall it.

IIRC a 3/4” spark plug socket will prove to be MOST handy in turning the cylinder into place. YES, it takes a LOT of pushing effort to get it there.
