I'm in the market for an engine analyzer. I need an OBD I capability (for my 85 TC, of course!) and OBD II for the remainder of my Blue Ovals. I've looked at devices from several different manufacturers and wonder if anyone can recommend a particular unit, or tell me which to avoid. I'm not looking for a professional grade unit, but something in the $200 to $400 range. Any advice will be appreciated!

An '85 TC won't be OBD-I. The only Fords I have encountered that were OBD-I were the '94/5 Mustangs but I would guess that most ~'92-'95 cars that aren't OBD-II are OBD-I.

My 85 TC has the OBD-I connector on it. But exactly which computer it has in it, I have no idea. I had to replace the computer when I bought it because it was gone.
As for the scanner itself, I have found one at the local O'Reilley's that scans both I and II for $275, and it come with a code book aswell.

I would focus more on a tool for the OBD-II applications. This is because the EEC-IV in the TCs is pretty limited - greatly when you compare it to an OBD-II application. The EEC-IVs in the TCs do not support live data mode through the connector, like the "newer" EEC-IV and EEC-V/OBD-II applications did.

Thanks for the info, guys. I have been able to get a few codes out of the automatic climate control readout in my 85 TC (which is NOT an easy thing to do if you've ever tried it), so I assumed that the connector under the dash would provide an OBD I output that would be useful. Glad I asked the question! Thanks again.
