My 1983 turbo coupe just got a Boport head along with a gnari turbo kit. My main concern is how much power I can run through the non world class t5. I plan on nothing more than 300hp for a while but will eventually want to replace the trans with something that will withstand more power. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the reply! I guess I’m gonna have to find a new trans... I haven’t found too many options other than the t56, and the tko 500 and 600 but can’t justify spending over $2000 on a transmission. Are there any cheaper routes while safely putting out over 400lb ft?

Yes according to the chart a stock T5OD—even World Class—can’t handle that much torque, only 240 ft/lbs. I’m sure with some modifications you could probably get to 300-305, but that sounds like the top end.

1987 Turbo Coupe w/T5OD, 8.8 axle, grey smoke; most options. Got it in 1991 with 41K miles: 3 turbos, 2 heater cores, 3 T5OD full rebuilds, 6 clutches, 1 head gasket, 2 Teves II ABS units, etc. later....

To me, it's totally worth $2000 for a transmission, if that is what you want. I mean, a rebuild for a Chrysler minivan would still be $2000. Right? It's a bargain. I know that doesn't help, ha ha.

I'll be in this boat soon enough too, I'm sure. My TC is probably close to 275hp or so as it is now and I recently picked up a pimp ecu, 1.9 boport cam, 80# injectors and such for the car. I'm hoping for about 330-350 HP.
