NW Ohio tranny question- HELP!

Ok guys. My 87 TC auto. tranny is doing the herky-jerky in OD. It does not want to shift into drive when cold. There is obviously something going on with it. How much do I expect to pay to get it fixed? Reasonably... of course. Also, is it better to just get another rebuilt tranny? Can you do that? Is anyone in NW Ohio good to rebuild? What do you guys that live in this area suggest? We want to pull the engine and rebuild it... so I really do not want to pay a lot of labor to have it taken out... help!

Dump that POS and put a 5 speed in it. I used to think maybe with Exploer internals in it it would hold up. Not so. i'm having the trans in my wifes Explorer rebuilt as we speak. This is at 95K. The vehicle has been very well maintained, including regular trans service. This trans is just plan crap and a money pit.

We have a 5 speed right now, but have sold some of the parts off of it. We did not want to do the conversion. I guess that the thought was that it was too much work. And (typical girl...darn it) I don't know how to drive stick.

I just don't want to put a grand into fixing the tranny, when I have the rest of the body to do yet. At that point, I may as well sell it to you guys and buy another for $3000 or so.

The auto tranny rebuild will cost you probably $800 to 2000 depending. You can do a lot of work for that kind of $$. Learning to drive a stick is not that hard and once you got it, you will wonder why you didn't do it long ago. If you like your TC with an auto, you will love it with a stick

Have you checked your tranny fluid? When's the last time you've had the fluid and filter changed? Do you let it run a while (warm up) before you drive it around?

There's a good tranny shop down here in Piqua area it's about 2 hours south of your location [Image: frown.gif]

BOBS TRANSMISSION SERVICE
6745 E SNYDER RD, FLETCHER, OH 45326
(937) 368-2576

But for your area, check these out...

FINDLAY TRANSMISSION SERV CENTER
125 CRYSTAL AVE, FINDLAY, OH 45840
(419) 424-0623

THERMAL TRANSMISSION INDUSTRIES
1205 E SANDUSKY ST, FINDLAY, OH 45840
(419) 422-3805

HOLMANS GARAGE ALL GENERAL REPAIRS TRANSMISSIONS
354 W SOUTH ST, FOSTORIA, OH 44830
(419) 435-3548

Those are the 3 in the yellow pages near you. Just call them up and get some prices...

I've got a T-5 from a 83 TC I'd be willing to give you for cheap, if you decide to go that way. And I'd even give you lessons... [Image: wink.gif]

You would still need the pedal assembly, clutch master cylnder, center console (to keep it looking pretty) and transmission support. (not sure what else...)

I have called around here in Findlay. Findlay Tranny will want around $1100 to do it....they want $275 just to take it out and look at it. I am not putting that kind of money into it.

We had a parts car. I have a 5 speed tranny. We sold the computer and other odds and ends. We are not going to convert it. I guess that I was hoping that one of you guys had a buddy that would rebuild it and we can put it back in ourselves....

Yeh, I'd like to do the t-5 swap too, still collecting parts. In the meantime I found a guy down here in florida that sells two types of rebuilt a4lds. One rebuilt with soft and hard pasrts - cost about $500 with a 1 year warranty. The other one he sells is about $950 and has upgraded internals. He guarantees it for up to 300hp! ?? He may ship too, not sure. If interested I can post his number - he doesn't have a website.

I happened to luck out and bought a 93 a4ld off a friend here in florida. As soon as I got it installed, I bought the biggest tranny cooler I could find. I am boosting 15psi with no probs. However, I do keep it in Drive vs OD when driving locally. Not sure if that helps to extend the OD life or not but it is just annoying when it switches to OD at 40mph or so. I am thinking of getting a chip so that it won't go into OD until 55 or so.

We are going to switch over to synthetic transmission fluid and a cleaner and see if that helps. If not, then we will probably go to a junk yard and hope for the best. Is there a larger automatic that we can put in?
