NOS question

Well I have been looking around for an old muscle car(for T-Bird)to trade with not very much luck. And thought I might sale the Turbo chicken. Then last night a college kid in TA pulls up beside me and we ran em for a couple of hundred yards. I dusted him BAD.Fun when ya see em later and tell them they just got beat by a pinto motor. So I get excited and start thinking about keeping it and building it a little more. I thought about making the 1st mod a 60 or 70 hsp. NOS system and some 4:10 or 4:11 gears.I know it's not running "just on the motor" as everyone around here likes to say about NOS fed cars. But hey! It's the cheapest HP you can buy. A local shop has 2 systems (used )for sale and one is a fogger and the other I have no idea what it is. Any one here had much experiance with NOS on our cars? If the gears and NOS will get this car in the mid to low 8 seconds in a 8th mile I'll keep it.I think I noticed where Glenn or someone had NOS on the timeslip page...Glenn? any suggestions?

The only person I remember having nitrous here is turbocoupe50. He has a 302 in his car. Make sure your fuel system is up to snuff(255HP pump and adj, regulator) before you go that route.

Sorry to ask what might be a stupid question, but why the added pump? This will be my 1st experiance with a NOS system, I thought it was just a shot of freezing air. I also have read where alot of these ricer guys a spraying the intercooler with NOS instead of injecting it. Thanks for the help Glenn. Also what gears do you have glenn? stock? Would also like to know (if yiou know) what your best 8th mile time is with your mods?

The nitrous cools the charge air significantly. That will require more fuel to go along with the cold dense air. There are 2 types of systems. wet and dry. The wet system actually injects fuel along with nitrous. The dry system relies on the stock fuel system to add the extra fuel. This is a bad analogy but when you driveyour car in the winter it has much more power. The air is colder and denser. Extra fuel will need to be added to adjust for this. The nitrous will cool the air much more than the winter air will. The stock fuel pump is barely adequate for the stock engine. Now that it is 15+ years old I wouldn't count on it being up to factory specs.
NO TC and NO headaches.

Also, with what you asked about the performance benefit as it applies in the 8th, the nitrous in conjunction with 4:10s will make for a sloppy launch, I guarantee it. Traction, as always, will be a major factor. That being said, should you choose to go this route, I would recommend not launching with the juice. Get going, hit the juice, shift very quickly.

The 1-2 shift will be wicked fast already with the gearing, and good tires and the gearing will launch the 60 well enough, so I'd hold off the juice till 2nd gear.

I have 3.73s (no nitrous) in my 88 and it doesn't like to hook at all with normal street tires. And when it does hook, watch out, cause here comes 2nd really fast! You better be able to shift like a pro, or run a beefy automatic to get thru the gears with 4.10s AND nitrous...

While it is true that nitrous is cold and that the cool intake chage increases HP that is not the main reason it creates HP. Nitrous has a LOT more oxygen in it than the air we breath does. It's like boost in a bottle. Getting more oxygen into the same space. That being said, the reason you need more fuel is if you add oxygen you HAVE to add fuel or you will go lean and that's very bad. I don't believe anyone makes a dry kit for our cars so you'll have to go with a wet kit which injects nitrous and fuel into a nozzle in your intake tract. Nitrous Express makes nice kits. I have a 150 shot on my 94 Mustang GT. You also HAVE to upgrade you fuel pump. You would be surprized how much fuel your engine can suck when it's boosted and sprayed. I would recommend a 255 lph pump from Walbro. They make good pumps. I don't know what your car runs now but a 75 shot should take about .5 second off your 1/4 mile times and give you 3mph. I hope that helps.

I agree on the pump, get the Walbro 255lph. Its what I have in the 5.0 Turboless Coupe. I've run as much as a 150hp shot with no problems(other than traction).

While I only have experience with the NOS dry kit for the 5.0(kit #5115), I don't see any reason it could not be used on a turbo 2.3. Just play with the presssure jetting size to give 70-75 psi fuel pressure on the juice(will over ride the normal boost fed to the fuel pressure reg). Would likely be rich on the lower end(should make launching easier), but with boost it'd really be screamin. I'd Install the nozzle in the throttle body same as the 5.0.

I've launched on the juice and have gone from a average 60 ft of 1.95 down to the 1.70 - 1.72 range(then my Bird is "push n go".....automatic). You will need some sticky tires to hold it though. My best 1/8 has been 7.82, on a 1.70 60ft at a 1/8mi track. Got a 7.84 on a 1.72 60ft when I made the 12.23 run.

Yeah, nitrous is a kick in the pants! I'm running a Nitrous Express 75 shot in the mustang and I went from 14.3@97 N/A to 13.3@104 N2O. This year I'm going to bump it up to a 100 shot.

Make sure you install all the safety stuff to keep your motor in one piece -- arming switch, WOT switch, fuel pressure switch, window switch. Personally, I would shy away from a used system since the cost of a new motor is much greater than the few bucks saved from cutting corners. For a lot more information from people more experienced than I, go visit the Corral Nitrous forum http://www.corral.net/forums/forumdispla...orumid=313 .

BTW, so you don't get too much ribbing, NOS is a brand name, nitrous oxide is the gas.

Mid to low 8's in the 1/8th mile equates to high 12's / very low 13's in the 1/4 mile depending on traction and gearing. Unless you plan on running an absolutely unfeasible 200shot, nitrous and gears alone will not get you there.

For comparative purposes, I ran an 8.98 1/8th mile on an old 14.134 1/4 mile run of mine. While this certainly isn't enough to keep up with any of today's modern performance cars, it's certainly enough to have some fun with.
