No start with multiple replacement CCRMs

Hi all! New to the TC and need the community's expertise.

I have an issue with the coolant fans not coming on. The previous owner had rigged up a bypass wire that he connected to the battery with an alligator clip when he drove around in the city. Personally I'd rather not do this, so yeah.

I believe the coolant temp sensor is working as the gauge appears to be working correctly, so I suspected the CCRM. I have the J code CCRM. My friend had an extra J from his '93 SHO, so I tried that one and the car wouldn't start. Figured it was bad, so I ordered one off ebay that was "tested and working." My car won't start with that one either. In both cases it cranks, I can hear the fuel pump priming when I turn the key to the run position. I'm thinking that the CCRM is not providing power to the PCM which results in the no-start condition. No check engine light.

Is there something here that I'm missing? Are the CCRMs not interchangeable with other ones that have the same letter code? Or would I need one from another Turbo Coupe?

Thanks for your help!

The sensor for the fans is totally separate from the sensor for the temp gauge. The fan sensor is in between the two middle fuel injectors on the lower intake,

What do you mean the fans aren't coming on? They never come on? Does it run briefly when the engine is started?

Thanks for the info, Pete. I will try jumping the pin on the CCRM to see if it's actually the problem.

Fans don't turn on at all, not on startup or when the engine heats up.

Does the CEL come on when the key is in RUN? If so, the PCM is being powered up by the EEC power relay in the IRCM. The fuel pump running when the key is turned on also shows that the PCM is being powered up.

Yes, all "J" boxes are the same. They were also used in the Gen 2 Taurus / Sable with the 3.0 Vulcan or 3.8 Essex engines, as well as the SHO's.

Have you checked for spark during crank?

Have you checked for injector pulse during crank?

I wonder what other wiring mods the last idiot owner did.

Have you run the KOEO codes to see if anything comes up? WHen running the KOEO test, the main fan (pass side fan) and aux fan (driver side fan) will both run briefly.

This might be of little help...but it's worth asking.

Does the smaller center-located fan come on when the A/C is powered up? Even if you don't have a belt on the compressor or even if there's no freon in the system, that fan should still come on.

At this point I doubt that it's going to happen, based on all that's already been tried. But if you try it and it DOES come on, then there you go, that's another factor.

Follow up to this one... sorry it's been a while, I got busy at work suddenly and didn't have time to give the car some love.

With the replacement CCRM, I do have spark, it seems there is no fuel. Which would lead me to believe the relay for the fuel pump might be bad, except that the same condition occurred with multiple known good CCRMs.

I ran a KOEO test to see if the fans turn on. They did come on, but the test never completes and no codes are produced (not even 11--the check engine light never flashes). Same result using a code reader--nothing. I checked the wires and since the car is generally mint, everything looks great, there is no corrosion and nothing is broken or exposed near the harnesses.

I am beginning to think I have an ECM problem. I sourced a replacement LA3 computer and VAM from another 88 TC, but since I'm kind of stumped on this, I've given the parts to my mechanic and asked him to have a look. He has experience with fox body cars and knows them pretty well, so hopefully he can resolve the issue without too much money leaving my pockets Smile

Thanks everyone for your help so far!

FYI, you will have spark even if the PCM is bad or not powered up.

Does your CEL even work? It should come on with the key in RUN and the engine off.

No codes outputted from the PCM (assuming you are doing the test right) often indicated a failed PCM.
