no IC?

Think I could run a T3/hybrid without intercooler, and would it be cooler air (in town) without stock IC over turbo?
Also wondering about the cfm difference without stock IC?
I'd eventually add front mnt but just want to run 10-12 psi to start with.

I don't have much experience.. but here's How I see it... The turbo performs much better with an intercoolor directly flowing into it. It would take more power from the turbo to only suck air from the intake, causing a delayed boost, and also, could affect the life of it. It seems possible, but I may not be correct. Why don't you just heat wrap the turbo, or the bottom of the intercooler?
my 1 cent.. don't have two yet =)

The thing is I have a T3 with old 2 bolt comp outlet that I want to try.
I could get a 2 bolt flange welded to the intercooler so it would bolt on in the stock location, but I wanted to force myself to upgrade it to cooler location.
I know I could run 10-12 lbs boost w/o IC cause I run 17-18 with a warm IC now.

Revamp- I have no idea what you just said...

Gary S (that would be the second Gary S [Image: biggrin.gif] )

What kind of car are we talking about?
I ran my XR7 w/ a T3 non-intercooled at 15 psi w/o issue.
I've got a FMIC on this motor now in the TBird.

I'm really not sure what you're asking here anyway. If you've got an early TC with an 87-88 IC, but with no ducting..then yeah, it's not going to make any difference with or with out an IC. Or maybe you have an 87-88 TC and are wanting to swap out the IHI for a T3....

How about some more details..

Uh the intercooler doesn't flow into the turbo!
The airflow goes FROM the turbo into the intercooler and then into the throttlebody and intake. The turbo does not suck air from the INtake at all. That is why it is called the IN_take. Air comes from the air filter housing to the VAM though the turbo into the throttle body and intake.

I have an 88 with a 48 T3 now.

I want to put a .63 T3 on but it has the old 2 bolt flange compressor housing.
I can get the IC hooked up in the stock location, just don't want to if I can run it for a while without.

Do the SVO style housings flow better than the old T3 style?

So you have an 88 TC with a T3 instead of an IHI which is standard in those cars and you want to swap in a .63 AR T3? You're sure it's a T3?

If the .48 turbo is in good shape, then why not just swap the .63 exhaust housing in place of the .48 and call it a day? You won't have to mess with the compressor(intake) side. That way you can just leave the IC on. You could also just swap compressor housings
too....that's usually easier as long as the compressor trims are the same.....

On the 88 TC having the stock IC is better than no IC.....

I like what Chuck said about swapping the exhaust housings, but I think whatyou originally asked is the same thing I've been wondering. I know there are cases when no IC can be better than any IC (or in this case an interHEATER).

So, that being said, if I swapped in my Holset before I was ready to install the GN IC it should follow that a marginal performance gain can be had by removing the IC and running pipe from the turbo to the TB- provided boost is kept within the optimum efficiency zone, say 15-18psi.

Well, I mentioned swapping the compressor housings since those bolts usually aren't siezed up and it's usually the easier route as long as the compressor trims are the same. Swap the SVO housing onto the .63AR turbo.
Also, while the stock IC on the TC isn't optimal, and it can get heat soaked sitting in traffic, once moving it will cool down and obviously be better than no IC. Just my opinion on it.

The turbo's are completely balanced rotating assemblies.
If I muck with them I lose any warranty on my turbo's.
I know it can be done physically but I'd rather just get a flange welded to my TC IC so I could use it with 2 bolt flange.

Thing is the .63 ran cooler in the intercooler department when it was on before, but I just thought if I ran it without it would be incentive to upgrade.
