No Boost Pressure

Today we drove for about 90 minutes with the turbo working just fine, parked the car for 3 or 4 hours and when we cranked it back up no boost pressure at all. I've looked over all the vacuum lines I can find and everything looks fine. Any thoughts on this other than a dead turbo?

Do you hear any air noises when it would normally produce boost. Check your inter-cooler hoses. I mean take them off and bend them trying to open up any cracks. When you put them back on make sure the lower one is properly seated and the clamp is in the right spot. Hard to see and easy to have off location. See if the turbo turns easy. Check the shaft for end and side play

no air noises at all...sounds like a pinto! What's the best way to check to see if the turbo turns? I tried access it from the compressor inlet side, but can't reach to turn it after I take the plastic air inlet hose off.

Take the piece that the air hose clamps to, on the front of the turbo. There are only 2 fasteners holding it to the turbo. Then you will see and can check the turbo shaft.

While you're in there, wiggle the compressor wheel around a bit while turning it and make sure it doesn't come in contact with the side of the compressor housing at all.

I'm remembering how to get dirty hands after 20+ years Smile

Got to the compressor and it was locked up tight as a drum, started wiggling it and it came free and now is working just like before Smile

All I can figure is that on the start before it failed I hit the ignition key quickly (it was raining and we were trying to get out of the deer woods...I know poor use of a TC) and the engine sputtered, coughed, almost died and came back to life. Must have had some type of back flow somewhere to jam the compressor somehow.

Anyway, if anyone is through Birmingham let me know and I'll buy your lunch!

Turbo shouldn't jam up without a good reason. Like Brian said, check that shaft for side and end play. If it's got much perceptible play or the blades hit the housing in any way, it needs a rebuild.

thx...I couldn't tell any side to side or in out play at all. No contact with the housing either.
