Newbie With a Couple Questions

Hi all,

I'm the new (relatively) proud owner of a bone stock '86 TC 5-speed, and it's giving me a few issues I can't quite work out. I bought it a couple weeks ago for a daily driver; it only has 100k miles and is in excellent cosmetic shape. I bought it from the second owner, and he knew the first owner very well so it's been with the same people most of its life, but it also hasn't been driven all that much in the past 20 years. I've done some basic tuneup stuff, new plugs, wires, fuel filter, timing check, and replaced a few vacuum lines. The biggest problem is that it pops out of first if I don't release the clutch juuuust right. As far as I can tell it usually happens when I'm easy on it, like in normal, non-racy driving; if I put my foot in it when I take off it almost never pops out. Needless to say, it's really, really, really annoying and is tainting my otherwise enjoyable experience with this car. The research I've done indicates that it's probably syncros or shifter stops, or something else that means rebuild/replace the transmission. My question is: is that really the case? Is there a way to check that short of pulling the tranny? On a related note, the clutch feels very...mushy. Not at all precise, and it took a little more getting used to than other clutches I've driven. I tried both the adjustment mentioned in the owners manual, and the one detailed here: http://www.corral.net/tech/drivetrain/clutcha.htm

I wasn't planning on getting that involved with this car, and as much as I love it I may end up just fixing what I can and trying to get my money back if that's what it needs.

Other things I need help on:
The electronic climate control readout flashes, and occasionally the heating option I choose has no bearing on what it actually does. E.G. I select floor, air comes out the panel vent instead. I pulled the code from it (thanks to this awesome site) and got 05 Blender Door Actuator Current, but I haven't been able to find out what that means. Also, a couple days ago, it stopped blowing hot air. Could be just a thermostat, but perhaps they're related? A/C doesn't work either, but with this car it seems more likely to me that it just needs a charge.

Another one of the (many) little issues is that the boost gauge is wildly inaccurate. I know they're not all that good to begin with and should probably be replaced with something aftermarket, but all this registers are little spikes. For example, I'll get into the throttle in 2nd gear, and around 4k RPMs it'll jump to 10 PSI and then drop back to zero, all without the jumps in power one would expect from such a reading. This is the ONLY situation where the boost gauge reads; I don't get any reading during idle or low RPM driving. Is this just how these gauges are, or an indication of something else?

I think that's it for now, any help is greatly appreciated. I've done some searches on these issues, but can't admit to a full scouring of all of this board's resources, so I apologize if any of my questions are redundant. FYI, I'm not only a new TC owner, I'm new to 4-cylinders and turbos as well, so it's entirely possible that *some* of my problems are because I'm just not used to this sort of engine.

This may help with the tranny problem
http://www.hanlonmotorsports.com/?q=node/8

I sent you a message on the heater code and blend door

My guess would be a leaky hose from the vacuum tree to the back of the boost gauge. I comes through the fire wall and you would have to remove the gauge pod to get a new hose on the back of the boost gauge. The gauge doesn't move until the engine is actually building boost. It doesn't boost at idle or low rpm.

one thing to check on the tranny is the rubber seal under the shifter boot... ive seen them placed in the wrong position on the shifter and it will bind the shifter from full engagement making the shifter pop out of gear....
88tc (sold) but keeping an eye out.

Pete: Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Most likely going to take it to a tranny shop for diagnosis, if anyone knows of good ones in the Portland area I'm all ears. Not looking forward to removing the gauge pod, but hopefully that's my problem.

4cammer72: Unfortunately it's not that; I was already poking around in there and everything is as it should be. Thanks though.

EATC: Code 05 is a blend door overcurrent code. THe blend door is likely sticking / linkage stuck / binding causuing the motor to draw too much current. Either that or the motor is just shot / partly siezed bearings, etc. Its probably blowing cold air because the blend door went to the cold position and is not stuck there.

Jeff: Thanks a lot! This seems to be the one EATC code that's hard to find info on, so this is very helpful. I'll start digging around in there once I have some more of the mechanical imperatives taken care of.

I think we should add a tech article on pulling the EATC codes and listing their meanings.
