The IHI really starts to struggle on our engines, once you exceed about 18PSI. At that point there are three major problems.

1. The exhaust housing is choking the engine
2. The air you are moving is REALLY hot
3. The turbo is spinning faster than it was designed for

What turbo are you going with for the dyno run? Even a T3 would be a HUGE improvement, and will far exceed what the transmission will likely hold...

Since Dyno is close to my place,i will start with the ihi. I really have to push the stock motor to is limits.

Mr. Dan

Isn't bench racing fun....but you did ask!!!!

You 95mph through the almighty A4LD is very amazing. To tell you the truth I always wanted to try what you are doing with a bone stock auto TC.

Side note, how would the 87-88TC auto been remembered if the car came with 190 hp on the auto(and the tranny survived without puking tranny fluid everywhere. I believe when you figure away to launch with more boost you will break the input shaft or other hard parts in the front part of the A4LD.)People would have been figuring out lots of ways to make more boost. Kinda like a slower GN of shorts. May have been a different turbo world for us....ohwell!

Back to Dan's ET??? Im not sure how much more MPH you can get with your basically stock stuff. Maybe removing the turbo and porting it. I agree with the other guys you need to tune for 17-18psi. So deal with the spring or wastegate to fix that. To make more power.

Obviously more 60' would get you closer to your goals. How much boost are you launching with and are you using the E-brake. Years ago when my car had a stock C3/T3 combo. I would have to use the ebrake to have anymore than 4psi to launch with. I know have a 3500 stall 10" converter, so launching with lots of boost is really easy for me.

If you can make 97mph in the 1/4mile, and get a low 1.7 You may get your 13.50's

JTMthunderbird may have some insite, he pushed an IHI car to 101mph.

Good luck,

Travis

I know for sure the tranny won't last forever, but that is 1 of the issue i'll have to deal with this year. Every body says heat will kill your trans, but i don't even think i ever seen a trans running that cool and so far so good.

The goal to having a long lived trans is keeping the temperature at a consistent to were ford designed the trans to operate at, you don't want a trans that overheats nor do you want a trans thats too cold Rolleyes

Then as 86XR7auto posted is not to exceed the torque rating on the trans, when your turbo kicks in your torque goes up. Seeing drive train components go POP is not a fun sight, I don't want too hear you post next post for the longest distance catapulting Sad

C4 and 3800 stall in the garage, so if anything goes bad i'll put my c4. Probably one of the biggest issue with these trans(A4LD) is weight of the car and lack of maintenance. I was also thinking of a little trick for cooling converter, if i take the little screwed dust guard off and drill 2 holes on the top of belhousing for hot air evacuation!

Kind of like what they do with rear diffs

Just about the best thing to invest for your trans would be a trans temp. gauge, if your trans stays at a good temp and you change around your fluids when required you should be in the gold Smile

If your temps go too high I'd look into a oil thermostat as the trans oil is what cools your trans, drilling holes in the dust guard I just cant see doing anything. Earls plumbing makes a nice oil thermostat that has 4 spots to install sensors.

Air circulation is always a good thing! and the car is not driven when it rains or snow.

If Dan was only driving the car, then his methods I believe should work well for along time, even at his power level. The world is a different place when you launch with lots of boost. Lots of stress on the internal parts of the tranny. That have nothin to do with heat.

I love 2.3T with auto. If somebody knows exactly how to build the A4LD with the correct parts to hold up to 300 RHP. Just think how many low mileage auto 87-88TC's are out there. That would be such a nice driving package.
