New to Turbo Birds

I am new to the whole field of turbo (lived rest of my life with N/A BBCs). After taking a ride in my friends Turbo TType, I was hooked. I have been looking around and it seems like the best bang for the buck, would be a turbo Thunderbird (87-88). From what I have researched it has the most aggressive computer, and all sorts of fun suspension gadgets. I believe they come with about 150hp stock(auto, 190 5 speed)......not much but the IHI Turbo they used those years were TINY!

Would this be a good car to get into the field of turbo-ing with? How well developed is the engine? What kind of abuse/power can the engine hold in its stock form?

THESE CARS ROCK! They can handle some serious abuse. This is my first turbo car, my first 5 speed, and my first, hot rod, if you want to use that term loosely. I can drop the hammer at 5000 rmp and let the hondas, see my taillights. These cars can make some serious power, with the right mechanical knowledge, patience, and this great place to access information and bounce ideas of these guys. best thing with gas being 2.30 pluse here in ga is that I get v-8 power with 4cyl gas mileage.

check out the tech articles, and FAQ on the board, thatll give you some good ideas on stuff about these cars, and the common little problems they might have

is your car automatic or 5-speed, i see you said it had 150hp, so im assuming its auto, but id rather ask before anything

The 2.3L in the Turbocoupes is basically the old "Pinto" engine. They seem to have a well-deserved reputation for taking a lot of abuse. As they are incarnated in the TC the stock bottom can handle lots of HP increase; there are cars with 350-400 RWHP with stock bottom ends!

IMHO not a good car to start "turboing" in, rather a GREAT one!

I currently do not own a Turbo bird (currently have an 88 camaro 305, 94 grand marquis, and 84 olds cutty).
What i had mentioned was that I took a ride in my friends turbo Ttype and after that I was hooked on turbo cars
