First my name is Victor, 25. I am an aviation mechanic, and a big fan of turbo cars, mostly GM but only domestic, anyways I found the 88 and did some research and got it.

I got the car for less then a grand and drove it home kind of. I had the keep filling it with water because one of the coolant hard lines had a hole in it. I got all the leaks fixed and all the hoses replaced but the main ones that I can't find.

That is my first question is were can I find them? I checked some of the local stores and they did not have them.

After that I took off the intake and went to cleaning. Found oil in there and a bad PCV valve to blame for that. Cleaned the EGR valve, and TB.

Once I got done with that I got into the electrical. I did a full plug, wire, and rotor. I did do a Compression test and got: 1-150, 2-137, 3-0, and 4-145. Oh its got 155,000 miles on it. Well the car was definably missing on the way home and had loss of power and #3 is why. I did a leak down test and found that every bit of air was coming out of exhaust valve. In fact I put 15psi in and turned the crank and only way I was get it up on the compression stroke because of the leak the rings are good and tight.

Now comes in to play the guy I bought it from not only did he have and gave me the hard line I needed, but he is giving he his spare head. He also took his alt on his running 88tc and gave it to me so I could get home. Really there is no words to describe how generous and helpful he has been, if you are reading this, THANK YOU.

Really mostly I am running blind on the rest of the problems if there is any. I need to put in the newer and working gauge set, also a freebie. I think the idle is a little low or we come back to the valve. When it comes to turn the wheel full lock and making tight turns at idle or just above it likes to try to die. If there is any thing else to check please tell me.

By the way if it was not for this website I would have never ever bothered getting this car, and definably would not have been able to get as far as I have got.

Any input on what to check or do next, I know I need to get into the suspension and fix the parking brake. But I am getting a kick out of just how easy this car is to work on. Had the thing down to the valve cover off and put back together and running in about an hour.

Oh one other question were can I find the belt for the accessories on the passenger side? I got the one for the alt and power steering but not the other side.

welcome!! I'm an aviation machinist mate (aviation mechanic) for the navy!! Great place here. Isn't it funny when you can tear down and rebuild a million dollar turbo shaft engine, but the these lil 2.3's will make you scratch a hole in your head? haha Good luck

Welcome to the board.
Be sure to change the hoses under the lower intake on the driver's side. Try NAPA for hoses.

I think you need to deal with the no compression in #3 first.
Try NAPA on the belt also

First things first, and this should be first! Since you need the "squeeze" in Suck-Squeeze-Bang-Blow in order for the rest to do their jobs, you need to find out why you have no compression in #3.

First thing I would do is pull the valve cover and see if the valves are indeed going up and down on #3 and if they are at the same height as the rest when seated.

My hunch, and that's all it is, is that you will find a bent or burnt valve.

Wait, where does this go?

I did look at the cam and it looks almost new. It definably does not have the ware of a 155k car. the valve does go down and up just like the rest by eye balling it. But like I said I put 15psi in through the spark plug hole and rotated the engine and on the CS the only reason I got it up was the valve. I could hear it scream past it and out the exhaust.

I am getting a new head and that will be this week's project on getting it ready to go on the car.

it sounds like a cracked piston/ring issue. get ready for a rebuild. it could be a burned valve but with zero compression, my guess would be the piston.

If it had a holed piston or broken rings it'd probably blow oil all over the place(been there done that), I vote for the valve...

I do not think that it is piston or rings but I will get a good look next weekend.

Today I got into it and replace the gauge cluster but I am not getting any MPH or RPM out of both of them. Is there any way to put power on to the clusters and check them before I start going though the wires?

Also what head gasket should I go with when the time comes, and also what exhaust gasket if they even take one?
