I noticed a "whistling" sound coming from turbo(?). It's not loud but it is there. Like when I'm shifting coming off of boost. What is that?

Yep. everything it tight. I should've been a little more accurate in my description of said noise...it's more of a "zipping / whining" type noise. Almost like one of them party kazoo things... Turbo makes boost and all, I just never heard the noise before.

My IHI made very little noise when I first bought the car. About a month ago it started to make the really nice metallic kazoo sound you've described. Thursday the front side seal decided to take a vacation. Instant mosquito duster. Of course, the only spare IHI I've got, and just installed, has a bad front seal also. Didn't know that before I put it in. T-3 time.
The IHI that I just took off has very little side play in the shaft, but you can pull it out almost 1/4 inch. It had no in/out play up until it finally went out. I'd been keeping an eye on it.
When you get into the metallic kazoo sound, it's time to look for a replacement.

How do you check for shaftplay? Sorry, I'm new to turbos and such...

take the inlet elbow off the intake side of the turbo (2 bolts) where the vam hose connects so you can get a good look at the compressor wheel, grab the bolt on the end of the shaft and try to wiggle it, its notmal for it to have a small amount of side to side (radial) movement but not enough for the wheel to hit the housing. the shaft should not have ANY in and out (axial) movement

Metallic sounding turbo noises are NEVER good news. Its normal for it to, according to my wife "sound like a jet." But again this is just simple whining, air noises, nothing metallic. If you like turbo noises and haven't done so yet put a KN on the VAM. I'm betting you have shaft play and are hearing the wheel nick the housing. Time for the T3 upgrade. Then you can take apart the IHI and look at the insides. Pretty cool stuff. If you do this, take and post pictures of your wheel and housing.
