My first post. I have an 88TC that I have owned since Nov 1991. It is the "Maroon" color with gray cloth interior, all original except for the "consumables" (brake pads, air filter, battery, etc.)

Has anyone used the DY1284 TFI module to replace the original. O'reilly has it available as a replacement. My car misses like it has hit a rev limiter as soon as the boost comes up even a little at any rpm. Plug wires (motorcraft), cap and rotor are all new. Any ideas. Thank you, Dennis

That is the correct part number. Are the actual plugs new-ish as well? TFI & PIP can cause all kinds of misfiring issues.

Welcome!

What brand / type / part number plugs are you using? What plug gap? These cars are VERY picky about plugs.

Have you run codes and looked for a CM code 16 (intermittent IDM failure) or 14 (intermittent loss of PIP signal)?

Welcome to the board. Run the codes as Jeff suggested. If it looks like a TFI issue then consider also changing the PIP. The factory recommends changing both together.

When I first started having trouble (a couple of months ago) the only code I got was a 11. I ran the codes again (after reading the above post's) and this time I got a 14 and 42 (42 condition probably caused by the bad PIP). I will be changing the PIP and TFI. Getting the 11 code originally threw me off. This should fix it-will let you all know. Thank you-Dennis

Get those Champion plugs out now. Champion plugs are only good for Chryslers and lawn mowers. Use either the stock plugs or NGK 2238.

Well, I installed the new PIP and TFI (both Motorcraft) and new NGK plugs (2238's). The car has new Motorcraft wires, new dist. cap and rotor. Took it out and drove it, got out on the interstate and it ran perfect. About a half mile from home while pulling away from a stop sign it started missing badly, got home and it had that "acid" smell from missing so bad. Any ideas on where to look next?

To add to my previous post; after sitting about an hour I started the car and drove to the hardware, about a mile away, it ran fine. On the way back it missed a bit. Maybe the new TFI module is bad? Should I go ahead and do the remote mount on the TFI? Thanks
