I started up my new engine today and the head is making a loud ticking sound. Kind of like a rod bearing noise or the valaves are hitting the pistons. The head was majorly ported and I put a 92 Mustang roller cam in it. What do you think the problem is, or is it supposed to sound that way?

If it's a ticking, even loud it might be a collasped lifter. If it a real knock then maybe something got in the cylinder before the head went on. Ask me how I know this [Image: biggrin.gif]
The valves won't hit the pistons until you get into pretty high lift cams.
How long did you let it run?

I let it run for 5 minutes. I also did notice that there is a possible oil leak by the number 3 cylinder. The only reason I am saying this is because after running for 5 minutes there was a oil smell and light amount of smoke coming fom under the manifold at the #3 cylinder. But there was no oil that I could see or touch or major major smoking-just enough smoke to notice.

On another note. I did replace the springs with heavy duty springs and it has all new seals. I did not however replace the lifters, because they were fine before I removed the head to do the head work.

I wouldn't worry about the smoke yet, it's probably just spilled coolant or oil burning off.
How loud and distinct is the noise. Is it a tick or a definte knock.

It is a constant ticking. The higher i rev it the louder it gets. It is not coming from the underside. I called Competition Heads- the one who did my headwork and he said most likely I did not run it long enough to let the lifters pump up. If this is true, how long should I run the car before I start to worry, and should it be driven or revved up?

I'm not sure how long it should take a collapsed lifter to pump up. The few I have had experience with pumped up in a matter of seconds, no more than a minute.
How about someone else on this?
I wouldn't drive the car until you know what's going on and get it fixed.

Do you still have stock length valves and rockers?
Sounds like the geomtry may be off somwhat. I have always had the HLAs pum up with in far less then a minute.
How does it run otherwise. Vacuum? Oil pressure is still good?
