My mechanic says my wastegate is frozen and they he thinks that it only comes as an assembly.

Question:  Can you just replace the wastegate?   Or do I need to replace the whole turbo assy?

Does anyone have a wastegate, or turbo/wastegate assy for sale?

Or is this the time to go to a T3/T4?

Any help is appreciated!

How much experience does the mechanic have with turbos?? I assume the WG wont move with 10+ psi air pressure applied to the WGA? If so, is the WGA diaphragm blown (wont hold air pressure)? Did your mechanic disconnect the WGA actuator rod from the waste gate and try to free the WG up with PB Blaster, etc, heat, and a vise grip to try to twist it with the waste gate actuator (WGA) rod disconnected from the turbo?

If going with a new turbo, STAY AWAY from made in China CRAP. NO WAY a $92 turbo is going to last more than a few months, and that is if it isnt bad out of the box. Back in 2000 when I bought my 88 TC, the IHI turbo was toast. Got a new Garrett T3 and paid $650 for it... that was 20 years ago. The turbo is still working perfectly boosting 24 psi after 20 years and over 100K miles on it.

The only way that turbo will last is if you keep it below 4 psi LOL

You can always spray a little WD40 on the linkage and bushing and see if that will free it up.

Hi Jeff, I was on another thread on another site and they said that:
some guys with 87-88 thunderbird turbo's usually replaced the factory IHI with a factory TB0344 that came on the 83-86 t-birds and 85-89 Merkur XR4Ti. Little bit bigger, slower to make boost but is worth about 20hp without increasing the boost (if you are currently at 14 psi for instance). The factory TB0344 with .63 turbine housing is good to about 300 flywheel horsepower reliably.

Any truth to this?

A few years ago I bought a 100 dollar E bay turbo T3T4 as a test and it lasted a few months before it blew up at 15 lbs of boost when I was shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. All the oil went into the exhaust causing a major smoke show and you couldn't see anything behind me. It was a sight to behold LOL.

Good Luck

^^^^^ Thats how my IHI failed 20 years ago.

It was a completely calm morning and I hit around 17 psi (first mod was a Gillis valve). Fortunately I was only about 2 miles from home. Smoke was so thick I couldnt see anything out the rear window. When I pulled into my driveway I could see the 2 mile smoke trail still hanging over the road. Other cars were driving thru the smoke trail at around 20 MPH as they couldnt see where they were going from the HUGE cloud of smoke hanging over the road.
