need transmission help

My Overdrive took a dump on me on the way home from work. All the other gears seem to work fine but if I try to put it in Odrive, the engine just revs but no forward pull. I'm wondering what could have broke and how to go about fixing the A4LD.

My 88 TurboCoupe doesn't have alot of pull getting around traffic so I tend to fall back a ways and then get a run on cars to pass. Today, I was building up some speed to get around a few cars, pressed the pedal to make the car downshift just as I was pulling out, and all of the sudden the revs went really high and the car did nothing. It has done this before but recovered shortly after. Not this time. I can run through each gear and drive down the highway in drive, but Odrive is unuseable.

The transmission fluid was recently changed a few weeks ago so I know that's good. Could the torque converter have gone bad or does this sound more internal.

look at getting your trans rebuilt.

It could be the overdrive drum assembly.

Minimum for a rebuild is 800 dollars to 1500. If you do, i suggest getting everything in the overdrive assembly be replaced for new. And having the alignment of the bellhousing to the pump checked too, because it tends to blow the seals out.

I think theres a link on here to the ranger site where theres a lot of talk about the a4ld.

just like that article says. REPLACE the hard parts. I've been there and had the hard parts fail a year later.

Maybe time to think about converting to a 5 speed. The car will be MUCH more fun than it is with the POS A4LD.

Has anyone heard of an electrical connection outside or inside the transmission becoming corroded and causing this problem. Someone I know said he was having a similar problem with another car and turned out something as simple as cleaning the connection.
Also, any companies out there sell A4LD's for unbeatable prices? I seem to recall seeing a site that had a decent price but I didn't add it to my fav's.

If the ONLY problem was no oD, then an electrical problem between the EEC and the tranny could be an issue, but from what you describe with the "engine just revs, no forward pull" sounds to me like an internal trans failure.

From the link listed above, could someone list the locations for each part/connection to check and maybe how to test them/damage to look for.
I'd like to check out some of these myself before giving it to a transmission repair shop and spending a large sum. I have a feeling pulling the existing trans out and purchasing a reman would cost just as much.

Thanks

The overdrive hub are famous for blowing out. I had an Explorer with the junk A4LD and it blew the OD hub.
