I never travel more than 5 mph over the speed limit on city streets or the freeways, but I'm plagued by tailgaters a lot. I was thinking about an auxilliary on/off switch for my brake lights so I can flash them without actually using the brake. I just want to discourage the tailgaters. Possible? A good idea? Would anyone know how to go about it?

I think that is a great idea. I have never been able to figure out why people feel the need to be glued to your back bumper when your already going 5-10 over and the opportunity to pass has presented itself numerous times. I say go for it.

well I figure if there on my bumper they want a ticket. so I pull over and let'em go. I have also been known to time it for the radar trap about 1 mile from my house. getem every time...

Why do they do it? Because they're morons and believe that they are the most important person in the known universe, and that everyone else should get out of their way and let them get about their vitally important business. /sarcasm

Such a switch would be easy to install, just parallel a spring-loaded momentary contact pushbutton switch with the existing brake light switch.
IMHO not necessary, though. Just adjust your brake switch so that a very slight amount of travel activates the brake lamps. Mine is like that from the factory. The stop lamps come on before any brake pressure is ever applied.
I've actually had idiots whom this "back off" action pissed off and they then rode even closer. They do back off though, when the brakes are actually stabbed momentarily and they go into panic mode.

I have often pondered this..... just hook a momentary contact switch across the 2 brake light switch wires.
FYI, Ford brake light switches are very sensitive, and even very light pressure on the pedal (just touch it) will turn on the brake lights without initiating braking (I have a story about a tailgating caddy on the freeway I did this to, which caused the caddy to run into the ditch).

Heck, I step on the parking brake so the car slows and the brake lights 'don't' come on!
Just kidding. I think about it, but don't do it.
Just letting them pass doesn't even satisfy some people, I had a guy tailgating me yesterday, and when I slowed down to change lanes to let him pass he got po'd even more! Sometimes it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with that little voice inside the other guys head.

Thanks guys. Right on Jeff. He had it coming. Yeah, my brake light switch is super sensitive too, and I was already thinking about an illuminated switch just like the one I use for my cooling fans, but I like Joe's idea better. I'll give it some more thought but I just wanted to see what everyone else thinks.
