Need nut to fit on shifter

Well my new shifter knob sit's pretty high above the pouch.. I want to cut it down about 2cm so it fits snuggly on top of the pouch. I will be taking a hack saw to cut it off.. But what I need to do is get a screw that will screw onto the threads the knob goes on to, and use it as a guide for cutting straight, and also so I can keep the threads from not being ruined by unscrewing the nut.

I've gone to a few car parts stores and none of the nuts fit properly.. They either have too fine or too course a thread.

What size nut do I need to do this job?

But I actually just took a hacksaw to it and filed down the remains..

Worked great

you also could have found out the thread pitch by using a pitch gauge or counted how many threads there was in an inch... no help now but for future reference
