Hey guys I was wondering if anyone had some ideas as to what would cause my car to have a sporadic hesitation. This happens both at idle and while driving. Basically, it feels like something is cutting out, and my tach needle will bounce downward for a second. It doesn't die, just sputters from time to time. Also when it does hesitate my fuel pressure or volts gauge doesn't move, just the tach.
This is on an 88tc, which has been recently rebuilt and rewired. Upon initially getting the car going it ran great. I killed a head gasket do to boost spike, so I threw a new gasket on, and finished up wiring everything. Now not only do I have the hesitation but also my fuel pressure won't go up with my boost. If I floor it in 2nd or 3rd the fuel pressure will go from roughly 38psi to about 42psi, once my turbo begins spooling, but then it'll drop down. I've been afraid to see how far it drops down, b/c I don't want to kill another gasket, but obviously something is amiss. I don't know if the two are related or not? To me it sounds like either a loose wire/bad ground (which one, who knows?) or a bad connection. My other thought was a fuel pump or regulator going bad or possibly a coil.
I'm kinda stumped though because I would think that the fuel pressure or volts would be irratic? So far I replaced the fuel filter, cap and rotor, just to rule those out, and they did need replacing. I rechecked the plugs, which are gapped at .030 and they looked fine, and I have newer Jacobs wires, (on a side note these are the only non-mototrcraft wires I have been happy with) also (is it possible that a plug wire can be bad, and it not show up on a resistance test?)
I plan on buying a new fuel pump b/c I'm still using the stocker (which is retarded I know.) But I'm not convinced that is where the problem lies. Has anyone heard of a fuel pump doing this, or does anyone have some input as far as what to do next?
On a side note, who's going to WFC in St. Louis this weekend? I'll be there all day tomorrow, I've been going since wfc2 was at Rt66 here in IL..
