Ok, so the new motor is in. After a leak, a a re-dropping of the distributor, finally got it running...sort of. Runs rough, like the cam timing is a tooth off. Adjusted it BOTH ways 1 tooth and it sounded the same. At TDC, the cam notch just doesn't seem to want to line up precisely, so it looks as if im ALWAYS a tooth off. I included a video, maybe someone could tell me...sorry about quality...

It looks like it is running smooth as far as shaking goes. But it sounds kind of noisy. How much running time did it have on it when you made the video? It sounds like noisy HLAs. I wonder if they are pumped up?

Pete, is probably pour sound quality of the video. There is no visual/physical shaking of the motor, but it sounds as if it is a tooth or two off in cam timing. Revving is sluggish, but it revs. But I adjusted it 1 tooth both ways from the "line setting", and there was no change.

Are you using that plastic pointer as your guide to TDC or are you using the string method. The plastic notch is never the same once the head has been off. The only way to make it accurate again is use the string method and then align the notch on the plastic so that it is true.

when i swapped in a new head on ym TC the first 20mins it was missing and sluggish... but it worked it way out after 30mins... the car was not right for a few months... but that's my own experience with a cheap reman head. we think it was my "unknown" cam i have. too.
how long has it been running?
did you drive it on the street?
what about you basics.... plug gap, fuel pressure, new fuel filter?

To answer RDOGs question... The plastic pointer is what I'm using as it came complete with the long block on the remanned engine. I didn't check the timing against the string and I KNOW the mechanic didn't either. I just assumed that it was on point by default. Very good point you make though. Will look into that tomorrow.

@ BJL...Do you mean before or after the new motor? I have yet to drive the car with the new motor...

You need to verify cam timing and then set ignition timing. Both timing parameters need to be correct before further trouble shooting
