I'm new here....I bought an 88TC 5sp and the motor was destroyed within a month....it had about 117k and it appeared to be the original motor..replaced the motor with another used one with good compression and this motor does the same thing the old motor did...that is, when warming up, she will try to reach desired idle but can get down to 1k before it starts to idle rough, bouncing between 1k and 1300rpms...as soon as the engine starts cycling, I get a cel and if I rev the engine, the cel goes out..the engine that was put in was complete so the only thing I can think of is vac lines or the ecm thats in common...I have a pe processor I will put in but I dont think thats the problem...I live in SD and really need some expert advice as to whats going on with my TC...anybody??

The wandering idle can sometimes be cured by 1. setting timing, 2. adjusting the idle speed, and 3. setting the Throttle Position Indicator (TPI) to the correct idle voltage.

1. Set the timing to 10 deg BTDC with the spout out of the wiring at the distributor. See any shop manual for more details.
2. Set the idle per the instructions found on the polution information sheet at the front of the engine well. You'll have to disconnect the Idle Air Controller to set the base idle.
3. Set and check the TPI voltage per the following link, http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Idle-...e2005.html

Most times the idle will become more consistent after these tuneup steps.

Welcome, and how'd you destroy a 117k motor in only one month. If the problem is the same now as with the old motor you are probably looking at electrical or sensor problems. What parts did did you take off the old engine and put on the replacement? Did you read out the computer for codes? Probably best not to replace the ECU until you solve the first problem. The wiring and wiring connectors in this car can cause a lot of problems. All connectors have to be clean and tight. There are many problems caused by poor grounding of the engine and other components to the body. Throttle position sensors wear out and as stated above have to be properly adjusted. Without knowing any more than you've said, I would suspect the TPS is worn out. Read all the FAQ's and Tech articles on this site so you get more of a feel for what you're dealing with. Confirm that all vac lines and intake hoses are leak free and report back what codes you get.

I'm not sure....I bought it for my girlfriend, she let "family" borrow it for a week, next thing I know the engine just quits....no codes, but the idle problem previously described...I bought a new dist. that didnt fix the problem....when the engine was taken apart, a nice size chunk was taken out of the block between no1 and 2 piston. the head also had the chunk taken out in the same area..I have never seen an engine go bad this way nor could I explain what happened...
The engine that replaced it had its own sensors, tb, turbo, etc. it didnt come with the vam which could be suspect as well...the tps was replaced and set by me in the previous motor but the problem still existed...I have owned two svos and two xr4tis and never had this type of problem...I will check the codes and replace all the vac hoses and hopefully that will fix her...I have a fmic (rapido) with bov waiting to be installed along with the pe eec...everything is on hold until I demystify this problem...now I have a missing muffler do you think that could be causing the idle issue as well?

Welcome. I doubt that the problem is the EEC. What the others said.

If the CEL came on, there is a continuous memory code stored. Get the CM code, and let us know what it is.
