Mystery Miss

For the last several months, I've had an intermittent "miss" that has progressively gotten worse. It's not a typical miss either, which is what is bugging me. It's like the motor will just stop/lose power for a split second and then pick right up like nothing happened. It used to do it just once a week. Then once every other day. Now it is happening about once every thirty seconds. There is no rhyme or reason to it. It doesn't do it at idle, and it waits until the car is warmed up to do it (usually about 5 minutes or so). It will also do it regardless of what speed I am going. Because it is intermittent, I'm having trouble pinpointing a specific cylinder that might be the problem. Things I've replaced recently that can probably be ruled out: fuel pump, distributor/TFI/PIP, fuel filter, plug wires. Any suggestions?

Does it only seem to happen after the fans kick on?

Checked your grounds?

If possible, check voltage to the eec and injector harnesses with the fans running.

Codes?

Sounds like maybe a bad connection or bad wire. Try the wiggle test, including the ign. switch

Ignition switch could be a possibility. I know I replaced it 2 years/30,000 miles ago, but it was with a switch that came with a batch of parts I bought. I'll have to take the car to AutoZone and have them read the codes (CEL hasn't worked in a LONG time). Where are the grounds located at? I'm pretty sure the cap is good. I'm trying to remember if I replaced it when I swapped out the distributor, but I know that at the very least I would have visually checked everything on it when I was working on it this summer. Haven't thought about the fans at all. I guess I'll have to find and unbury my voltage meter and check that. Thanks for the replies and keep the ideas coming.

Grounds = http://www.turbotbird.com/faqs/#Electric...0Locations

There is a big one connected to one of the bell housing to tranny bolts, I think on the driver's side and another to the Lower PS bracket bolts, bottom of the engine, near the front, driver's side

Mine did that about a year ago and it progressed over a few months.

It got bad so i did a tune up and a new tfi module fixed it.

The car had fresh plugs and wires put on in December. Timing was reset when I dropped in the new distributor in June. This is the third TFI on the car since early May, and it has done it with all three. Local AutoZone said they would only read codes from '97 up. So I guess I get to try Advance in the morning. I hope they are able to do it... I vaguely recall owning a test light at some point in time, but it is buried even worse than my voltage meter.

Just get a small 12V bulb (like a 194) for under $1 and hook it from batt + to STO on EEC TEST connector. to flash out codes. Be sure to run the complete test set.... KOEO / CM and KOER.

Sir jump the ALDL SELF TEST CONNECTOR pin 2 To the STI (self test imput)lead. Key the ignition on not started and read the codes from the Check Engine Light on the dash. Hope this helps. Have a wonderful weekend gentlemen
