My Track Toy Build

Hi Everyone,

I started this build in May on a car I picked up for $500. It was clean but didn't have an engine and started life has automatic. Before I got this car I had a Merkur XR4. It died from a large tree branch falling on it. So I had a lot of 2.3 stuff laying around. Some of this is old news to some and some of the pictures have been posted before but I decided to put everything in one place. The plan is to build a track car that can still be tagged and driven on the street some times. I had gotten a ton of work done on the car with the help of my friend Rob Booth who figured out how to get all the Maximum Motor sports stuff to fit. I then hurt my back in June and haven't touched the car until today. I finally got the car into the garage witch was a wreck. So my goal for the weekend was to get the garage clean and the car in it. The garage still needs a little work but the car is in it as of 11:00pm tonight. What a struggle!!!!! Now that the car is there I can finish stripping out the factory wiring harness and clean up the tar paper residue.

Then I got the car stripped out and we started adding some parts.

And now tonight with it in its winter home.

Here is a hint to one of the modifications I have planned.

I know this car isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea and some of you are wishing I just did all of this to a Mustang. I don't like being like everyone else. There are tons of Mustangs at the track already. Turbo Coupes are much better looking cars than Mustangs with more of a aerodynamic shape. This car was a dead car that had been sitting for 10 years and now will have a new life. But its going to be a hard one.
Stay tuned!

Rock it, man! I love seeing a TC on the track. Now you need to do a write up on how to get the various MM components to work on our cars!

Its getting a 2.3 and a T-5. I also swapped in a 3.55 rear. No V8 here.
With the MM parts they had rear control arms, and camber plates for hour cars. The rest needed a tweak here and there. The K-member needed to be spaced down with an 1/8 inch plate between the K-member and the frame. There subframe connectors for Fox Mustang don't fit at all. We had to cut them in half and reweld them to work. If I had to do all over I think I would have gotten some of the stuff from Griggs. They have alot of stuff but I didn't know that at the time. The adjustable rear sway bar needs some more work because I only have half the adjustment available. I'll do more write ups has I dive back into it.

You know that by starting a thread like this, you are now forever committed to working on the car, and more importantly, posting the progress... Wink

I love what you're working on over there!

More pictures ASAP!

Yep, I'm surprised your the first to ask. I thought that would of been the first thing people asked about. It must not of a curd to sane people that you would even consider putting your radiator in the trunk. Its going to be interesting. I have seen it on some other race cars and on the new Lexus LFA. So I thought I would give it a try. I was already going to run a electric water pump so then it's a little plumbing and ducting some air and it should work fine. I'm trying to move all the weight I can off the front of the car. I want to mount a oil cooler and a air to water heat exchanger back there also. David Godfrey is making me a air to water IC. I have a front mount Stinger IC also. At first I will run both IC's then do some testing and if the air to water IC is efficient enough then I will just run that one which will let me lose even more weight off the front. I will gain some weight in extra plumbing and more fluids but hopefully will have a better balanced car. The only bad part is once I do this, there is no going back because of what you have to do to the car to get air where it needs to go.
