every once in a while, the leather boot to the shift lever and the plastic of the transaxle column resting against my right leg gets very hot. It isnt all the time, or all that frequently, but i was wondering what might be causing it? sounds like the trans is overheating or something, but the fluid doesnt smell burnt. would a trans cooler help problems? does anybody have one? 88 TC manual. Thanks guys!

I can't explain why this is happening or why it's intermittent. I do know that under the plastic trim piece that surrounds the shift boot are suppose to be two pieces of insulation. One is about square and about as big as the trim piece the other is round and smaller. These are both heat and sound insullation. If these aren't in place and properly, there can be a hell of a lot of hot air circulating under the shift boot.

I ran mine without the boot and insulations for a couple of days and once the engine and exhaust system warmed up there was so much hot air coming up through the hole that it would roast me out the car.

if you decide to pull the trim piece around th eshift boot to check the insulation, it's held on by a screw on each side in the back. The front is held on by two plastic projections on the bottom side of the trim piece. These fit into friction clips. pull the trim piece straight up and dont wiggle it from side to side or the projections will break off.
