My First TC and having a problem!

Hello,
I am new to this site as well as a new TC owner. I picked up an 88 TC, all power, moonroof, leather 12 disc CD changer, auto trans (which I dont really care for) and a lot more. The car has 130k miles on it and appears to be stock with the exception of the 4:10 gears in the rear end (I was told) and the delta flow exaust. I scouped it up for a mind blowing $400 because it has a mystery problem. When I first start the car I have to give it gas to keep it running. After about a minute it will run just fine and idle at around 800 rpm. Every now and then when I stop at a stop light or something it will knock off but I can start it again immediately and have to repeat the process of keeping my foot on the accelerator for about a minute. The check engine light does not come on and I had it checked and the computer is storing no trouble codes. I don't know where to begin looking to try to solve this problem so I'm hoping a fellow TC owner or owners can point me in the right direction. I've heard a lot of great things about TC's and hope mine will deliver great service as so many have in the past for others. I currently drive a 91 LX T-bird with a 5.0 HO and am really looking forward to driving my TC as I know it will reflect the difference at the gas pump. My 91 has delivered over 227k trouble free miles but is starting to look bad. Believe it or not, the TC I picked up looks much better and rides better too in my opinion. I look forward to hearing suggestions from anyone who may be able to help as well as joining ths site in an effort to keep the TC's alive and kicking. Thanks in advance. ~Nick~

The first things I would do in your situation is clean the IAC, check and the TPS, and make sure the EGR valve is working right. If you do a search on each of those acronyms and look at the FAQ, there will be a ton of info on how to check, clean, etc. each of those.

My guess is probable repair total of about $20 or $30, total, including cleaning and rehydration fluids, (doing it yourself, of course,) at most.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,
Thanks a bunch for the speedy replies. I will check on each of those items tomorrow. Both my brother and I have a bit of experience working on cars but for the most part we build race cars and don't deal a whole lot in fuel injection or computers. I can't begin to express how much I LOVE my TC and I can't wait to get it running right. This is one of those cars that would be well worth the cash needed to restore. For one, most of the car isn't in bad shape, and for two, I figure for under $10K I can't pretty much have it in cherry condition yet be able to use it as a daily driver. How many "new" cars can you put 10 grand in and be done with it? Sorry bout the rambling. Thanks again. ~nick~

I would check the ignition from the rotor and cap to the spark plugs. Also check fuel pressure as my guess might be a weak fuel pump.

Ooooooo..... Sounds like a problem that just can't be fixed. Tell ya what, I'll take that car off your hands for the $400 you paid and you can go back to building race cars.
