My car makes the sound of a million crickets... *sigh*

Okay, while driving, and sometimes while idling, my car makes a noise like a VERY loud cricket. I assume the noise is centered around the clutch because when the clutch is pushed in the noise goes away. In fact when the clutch is pushed in at all the noise goes away. We just changed the driveshaft (mine fell out on the highway... wheeee [Image: frown.gif]) We also put in a new clutch plate and spring (correct name escapes me right now)

Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? Please help, the noise is driving me nuts.

Mine does this and i know a few other people have this. and i have had it in 2 cars and 1 right after a new clutch. I was told that it is beacause there is a airbubble in the hydrylic clutch line and you need to bleed it or something. i just ignor it. it can get annoying though.

Ahhhh the old cricket sound !

What that is is the Throw-out bearing fork has spring clips that go on the pivot ball joint in the bellhousing. Those springs are sprung...

For a quick fix, take the slave cyl cover off the bellhousing and put some grease behind the fork where it clips over the ball joint (between the fork and the ball joint).

Mine does the same thing and my auto instructor said the throwout bearing is bad and if it isnt replaced the tranny could possibly go at anytime. He said depending on severity it could just go on annoying you or might cause problems, just depends. I didnt know so many people suffered from cricketitus like me.
Rice never knew what hit them.

So is it or can it cause problems?

I just exterminated my crickets last weekend. I assumed it was a throw bearing and put one in a month ago.... the crickets still remained. Not a happy camper.

I got smart the second time around and bought a new clutch fork from Ford $13.... and new pilot bearing $3 from Carquest(the clutch was new when I bought the car 3 mos ago). I pulled down the tranny and found that the pilot bearing was gone!!! No needle bearings left at all. Installed the new bearing and new fork... the crickets passed away. It sucks I had to do the job twice but it solved the problem.

Durn it, I got crickets now too! Did the grease on the pivot ball and socket fix this? Gonna give it a try.

This question comes up ALL the time.

My car does it also.

Please listen to Dan and do as he suggests. Grease the pivot point. It will temporarily completely eliminate the sound, but when it does come back it won't be nearly as bad.

Don't listen to anyone who says your throw out bearing is bad until you try this first.

My 88 Thunder Chicken TC has been doing this for a while now, I just figured it was because the was the first stick shift that I have ever driven, and first car to ever learn on. But to tell you the truth, it is extremely annoying, but i just crank the system and the crickets go away....at least to everyone in the car...lol But seriously, i think..in my opinion, that it has to do with the tranny side, of the clutch and tranny connection. I had my clutch replaced because itwas making that noise, then the noise just got louder after replacing it, so i had the bearing changed again..hoping that the mexico made part was a piece of sh*t!! But it wasn't, so my mechanic said if he was to grease something it should go away, but when he tried, it only went away for about the first 30seconds of me driving it away from the shop, and after 3 attempts to fix it, i said it has to be on the tranny side, cuz the whole clutch was done, and throw out bearing was done twice......so I would say its on the tranny side.......but if you guys can fix it by doing the grease on the forks, then let me know....
thanks a million,
