Well I changed the lower Control Arm on my 1988 TurboCoupe 5sp as you see in earlier threads this week, started to drive to work Thursday morning and my car just died....engine cut off, even coasting with clutch engaged and giving it gas, it would not stay running. So I had it towed home that Saturday. Today my son and I look at the engine when I started it, and the timing belt wasn't turning at all. Now keep in mind my engine bay is very..very...very..oily (my valve cover gasket needs reseating) and there is oil all over the place. 1st theory is lots of oil got into lower sprocket and belt is slipping. 2nd....I don't have a clue??

When the key is turned, you don't see the timing belt turning at all.

If the belt isn't turning either it broke completely or the teeth on the belt broke off around the crank pulley. Either way = new belt. Oil might?? have contributed to the belts demise. Might want to take an extra 2 hours and replace that VC gasket (use the Ranger rubber reinforced gasket, Ford)

On my prior car, a 93 mustang 2.3, I had the exact same problem happen. Just died, and wouldn't start at all.

Turned out it was the crank sensor that snapped. Give that a check?

I think the crank sensors got paired with the DIS system that cam in after the TC production ceased.

When the key was turned, the starter turned but the crank wasn't turning at all.

There is one section I couldn't see. The cam pulley cover underneath the car, way below the timing sprocket I couldn't see it because there is a cover over it. I'm guessing something is wrong/broken in that section because it's not turning at all when I try to start the car. Of course, the car won't start at all.

I will look at the belt tomorrow. If it's broken, wouldn't I be able to pull on it at the top and it would just come off, or be very loose?

Do you mean the "cam" wasn't turning. If the crank wasn't turning, that's a different problem Big Grin
