Hello All. Ive been reading this board since the purchase of my 1985 Cougar XR-7 a few months ago. I find the information posted to be very useful. Im hoping now to maybe be able to give something back. I am getting ready to relpace the motor mounts on my car and it seems like from reading posts and checking local vendors that the only place to get these is from Ford at a high cost?? If this is the case I am going to try to make my own. I have access thru my job to a few vendors that should be able to make whatever I need. The question is if I can come up with something is anyone else interested?? What I would like to do is find one or two guys with different year cars (87/88) and make 3 or 4 sets, have them installed, and see what happens. A test group if you will. If everyone in the test group is happy then we will make them for whoever needs them.
What do you all think?? Let me know

Well I can tell you from my own personal experience with my 87 that the larger mount is discontinued from ford. I had to go through greens sales I believe it was called to find them. They had 6 showing in the system nationwide, but only one that I called actually was able to physically find the part and verify that it was there. No one else could locate it, so I convinced the manager to ship it from Texas, to Pittsburgh for me. The other smaller mount is still available from ford, as well as napa, pepboys, etc. Good luck.

I was in need of a set for a 85 research found that the 85 model year had different mounts before or after 4/85. The mounts were long ago dicontinued. I was unable to find any, aftermarket never made them. The company that made them for Ford is called Strafluid, after more searching I was able to contact them and was told they would see if they could come up with some NOS stock. I'm still waiting and that was Feb. 2000 so the short answer is YES I would be interested in the 85 style mounts. Note the 86 is slightly different 87/88 drastically different.

the 83-84 and the 85-86 and the 87-88 mounts are all indeed diferent by design, but infact are all interchangeable,as long as you change the whole mount.I have recently proven this to be a fact through actual trial fitting.I would say that since the 87-88 solid rubber ones are the strongest and best (stock) design, that they would be the one to duplicate.

Too much fun, what's that mean? That's like too much boost, there's no such thing.

Sorry for the delay in response. I was in the garage all weekend changing the clutch (and makeing a few improvements)on my 1985 XR-7. Thank you all for your replies. I plan on moving forward with the motor mount design. I am going to replace the WHOLE assembly. That should make this a universal install?? I will make a post as soon as I have somthing firmed up. Thanks again for the input

i'm still wondering if i would have a problem running the mustang motor mounts and trans mount in a 86 turbo coupe. either mustang or thunderbird mounts are obselete.
------------------
69 mustang coupe (next project)
86 turbo coupe (it's fun beating a honda...with something twice it's size!)
86 SVO (it's amazing what people can screw up)
90 mustang GT (project scratch and dent)
...i'd rather be trolling...
86 turbo coupe (14.12 at 15 psi. sleeper) *gone*
...so you have a V8...isn't that cute...

Actually I have a tip for trans mount. Mine was bad when I changed my clutch. I found a replacement (for $80.00) I remembered I had a 1983 Mustang conv V/8 that I converted to dual exhaust. I found the old Mustang trans cross member (bolts right in) bought a 1983 V/8 T-5 trans mount. Its a slick conversion. The mount bolts direct to the trans and the crossmember. BTW.. the Mustang trans mount...$12.00!!!! I would imagine any 1983-199? mustang w/ t-5 would work. Along this line...Anyone know what the weight on the turbocoupe (1985) trans cross member is for?? I am guessing its for vibration ??
