I was drivin my bird around the other night (was running perfectly) and all of a sudden (i just downshifted to come to a stop) it started to run really bad...like it does when I blow up an intercooler hose or something. I limped home (still went like 40 but not easily) and figured it was a hose. Well it wasn't and I could find nothing wrong at all. I then guessed, well maybe the timing skipped or something. So I line up the cam mark and sure enough, TDC. I then start the car and it runs fine. (All i did was turn the crank around). Today, it did the same thing again (runnin bad) but this time when I got on it from a stop. And sure enough, turning the crank around fixed it again. Any ideas? Is something loose that I'm tightning when i turn it or what?

Sounds like the cam timing belt is jumping at higher stress levels like fast starts and downshifts. Either you need a new belt or maybe also a new belt tensioner.

Thanks. The belt appeared to be a bit loose. I have a nice ets tensioner laying around here so I guess now's a good time to put it on. How much play is "OK"? The belt now appears to be pretty loose....i can push it back about 1/4 inch or so. Probably way too much.

One of my tensioners likes to hang up when "released" to reapply tension. I use a crowbar to give it a little nudge. It can only go so far so you don't need to put a lot of force on it.
